I am thinking of building a cart to hold my Thunderbolt, Pro MIG 140, and HF arc starter along with two 80cf bottles (75/25 & straight argon).Anyone done this? Anything negative about it? I know the cart will be long but it will then still fit under my table so it doesn't take up room in my 2 car bike shop. GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:Pros:Fits under the benchNot top heavy (not really an issue with 80cf bottles anyway)Cons:Awkward to change bottlesValves and regulators FAR more vulnerableIf you ever want to use straight co2, you'll still need a vertical bottle rackPain in the *** to see and adjust regulatorsMakes cart really long, which makes it awkward to moveLooks rather unprofessional (don't know if that's a potential issue for you)You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE
Reply:Apologies, they are 120/125 size. Thanks for the reply, I'm sure it will be a bit of a pain but I'm still weighing my options. I would have the valves at the back of the cart enclosed under a hinged door and have it setup so they would slide out of the front. Maybe some thoughts on improving the design?GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:Why does a co2 bottle need to be vertical? I have used many bottles laying down with no problems.Am I missing something?thermal arc mst400, va4000 feeder, lincoln 175 min, victor torches, miller s32p feeder, air arc k4000 for work.

Reply:Can it be done... yes. would I do it? no. you're giving yourself WAY more hassle than it's worth. It may be time to do a redesign of the shop layout to accommodate the plethora of welders, tanks, and cables. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:As stated before, straight co2 in a cylinder is gas over liquid, just like propane.  Laying the cylinder on its side when it's more than half full will result in liquid entering your regulator, which is bad, mmkay. Also, if you design your cart for 120cf tanks, and one day realize you're using enough gas that it's more economical to buy larger cylinders, you're kind of screwed. And having the valves at the back under a door would be a HUGE pain in the dick.  Every time you weld, you'd have to pull the cart out, turn on your gas, adjusting your regs based on the task you're doing, push it back in.  Then when you shut down, you'd be pulling it back out AGAIN, closing the valves, and pushing the cart in yet again. If you're going to have them laying down, make the valves up front with an impact shield of some sort. You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE
Reply:Lay it down....in a pinch maybe.....for permanent use go vertical!!!Don't know that a flow meter will work correctly horizontal.Another consideration...........accidents happen in a split second......drop something on the valve of a full bottle..........2000 PSI missile!!!
Reply:Ball-type flowmeters definitely won't work in horizontal position.Everlast PA160-STH... and that's about it!

Reply:Thanks for all the input guys!I think it is time to reconsider the layout of my shop.  Maybe I can put something else under the table and put my welding equipment next to it.Even though we can fab things any way we want I guess KISS still applies sometimes...Thanks again!
