In the market for a belt sander for my garage for my lil fabrication needs, nothing super industrial strength or anything. Was wondering what brand and type would be good to go with along with some recommended belts. Figure I'd see what people would recommend before I go out and buy one and later regret it.Miller Syncrowave 180SDMillermatic 175
Reply:I purchased the Wilton brand combo 6”x48” belt and 12” dia. disc sander. The one you can find in all the sales flyers i.e. MSC, J&L, Enco. It is the same design as the old Delta Rockwell but 1/3rd or so the price.Paid $1000 or so for it about 10 years ago. Had to install new drum bearings in it four years ago as they went bad. Put in some better bearings and has been ok sense. I use it quite frequently and it does do heavy duty metal removing especially using the disc sander with very coarse paper. It would be hard to suggest the sanding machine that would work out for you most economically. But from my experience, I can tell you that the better the sanding material you use the better most machines will work. Good quality discs and belts make for faster cutting, longer life, and put less heat into the work as cheaper belts do.My advice would be to buy the best machine you can afford, possibly a little bigger than you think you will be using and purchase the better paper for it. One good brand is Norton. There are other brands available but it works the best for me so far.Hope this helps.

Reply:as always watch craigslist and local auctions.you will find a sweet one for less than 200 dollars most of the time. dont sweat the three phase ones. this is one machine you cna find a suitable single phase motor for. or get fancy and do a dc variable speed conversion.insert thoughtful quote from someone else2000 Thermal Arc 300GTSW 3.5 hours1946 Monarch 20 x 54 Lathe1998 Supermax 10x54 Mill2004 Haco Atlantic 1/2" Capacity Lasernot mine but i get to play with it
Reply:I got one from H.F. for what I do it's been great, I do however but the belts and discs from H.D. Better cutting with there belts than the H.F. ones. It was on sale for 69.00 with a coupon I believe.Miller Thunderbolt 225Millermatic 130 XPLincoln HD 100 Forney C-5bt Arc welderPlasma Cutter Gianteach Cut40ACent Machinery Bandsaw Cent Machinery 16Speed Drill PressChicago Electric 130amp tig/90 ArcHobart 190 Mig spoolgun ready
Reply:I'm fairly pleased with my Harbor Freight 6" x 48" belt sander with 9" disk.  The switch broke right off the bat, but I upgraded it with a switch from Grizzly.  The alumina zirconia belts work MUCH better than the original belts.America Needs AMERICA'S Oil!!!"Global warming is the greatest scam in history ...There is no run away climate change. Reply:I found a Powermatic sander on craigslist, fairly local to me. I'd always heard good things about the older/vintage Powermatic line, so I rolled the dice. We've used/abused this machine quite abit since taking ownership. It has impressed me. Definitely don't be afraid of some of the older, secondhand equipment that's starting to pop up forsale with the turn of events in the economy lately.
Reply:Either one of These two would be just fine in my garage: http://www.atlas-machinery.com/produ...11&detail=truehttp://www.atlas-machinery.com/produ...65&detail=true
