I am in the market for a tig welder. I've been looking around and the lincoln 225 or a miller about the same size looks like it would be great for me. I am new to tig welding and i needing something to learn on, but i want it to be able to handle some bigger jobs later. If you experts have any advice on what welder i need feel free to chip in. Let me know what you have.THanks
Reply:If you expect to Tig Aluminum, probably a 250 or 300 ACDC HF unit with a foot control would be best. John Any Mfg. you like will be OK.SMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases. There all here. :
Reply:will only be doing a little aluminum, most going to be working with chromoly
Reply:Then ACHF is almost a must. will explain if you want. JohnSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases. There all here. :
Reply:yes please do and thanks for the help
Reply:AC is 50% DCEN and 50% DCEP, 60 Cycles per min. DCEN to weld and DCEP to clean off the oxide. HF because you have to have more that 80 OCV to restart the arc on the DCEP cycle, because of the Oxides on the aluminum and you have to have DCEP to Clean it of for welding on the DCEN cycle. I hope this is Ok instead of Streight and Reverse Polarity. John.SMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases. There all here. :
Reply:Just an idea. There are alot of good deals on the old TIG machines out there from years ago. Search Craig's List or the any of the used equipment sales magazines, like Equipment Trader. An old Miller Dialarc HF or Lincoln Ideal Arc or Hobart watever can be found for around $500 with everything needed to weld steel and aluminum, if you look for the deals. This is provided you have enough power available to run one of these power hungry monsters. Most of these machines have 250 or more amps of output, AC/DC. More than enough to weld most anything you will have a need for in any kind of metal. They don't have many features, but then again, TIG welding was done sucessfully for many many years without the fancy features of the new inverter machines. A 250+ amp inverter cost quite a few very shiny pennies. The 185-amp inverter I have cost me enough already...MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op |
