Yup, at it again. Went out to the shop early this morning, fired up the old Hobart to allow it to warm up while I gathered supplies for a small job I'm getting ready to do. I noticed the idle wasn't returning to low speed quite as linear as in the past. I went ahead and struck an arc and the idler's operation was inconsistent; the engine would readily accelerate and the machine would weld fine, but the return to low idle was inconsistent. Sometimes it would be 20 seconds, sometimes two minutes, and sometimes never. Thinking "what's up with that", I shut it down and pulled the idler solenoid from it's mounts. A quick teardown revealed a stuck slider piston that blocks the bleeder port bypassing vacuum to the dashpot which actuates the throttle. When the magnet is energized the piston is pulled up in it's bore blocking the bleeder port allowing engine vacuum to apply to the dashpot. When the magnet is de energized, engine vacuum acts upon the piston pulling it back down in it's bore till it uncovers the bleeder port and the engine returns to low idle. A needle valve, (much like a carburetor idle mixture valve) regulates how quickly engine vacuum is allowed to build in the cylinder this piston slides in. It is not like the Lincoln setup which uses the insert foam, or material to restrict vacuum build. Anyway, everything about this thing is grungy and I really don't want to heat the shop, nor the parts washer tank for such a small run so elected to do it on the stove while my wife is sleeping. Man it's getting hard to find a metal coffee can anymore and I looked high and low in the garage till I found one full of bolts. I figgered plastic will hold bolts but to boil these parts needs the metal can; (after the last go round with the dishwasher, I ain't doing that again). Parts are boiling on the stove as I type this and man is that water dirty:Hopefully this will finish up pretty quick. I can't smell anything so am laying odds the kitchen doesn't smell like the shop as that's another set of problems.......SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....

Reply:Well, I may be occupying that 16 square foot shack in the back yard for a while but my welder works like it should so it was "worth it"..... She didn't catch me in the act but walked in shortly after I'd rinsed the parts off to cool them down in the sink. The coffee can, (still steaming) was in the right side of the double sink bowl, and I was drying parts in the left side. Rapid deduction on her part led to the conclusion that coffee can full of greasy, nasty water with "floaties" had been on the stove and I'd lied again and returned to my former antics. I swear it'd be easier to explain another woman's lipstick on my shirt collar than working on stuff in the warmth of the house.I feel I've committed an international crime with people from a neighboring country wanting to kick my backside.......Thanks,Last edited by Slob; 01-01-2015 at 04:58 PM.SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....

Reply:This thread makes me glad for the wife I have. As long as I don't damage her cooking utensils and clean up my mess there is no problems. My wife even let me have my own man cave in our house. Matter of fact she even has her own work room for her craft projects  while I have mine to repair what ever I choose. Plus I have my shop (single car detached garage). Day before yesterday I brought in my welder to finish the mods I am doing to it and she did misunderstand me thinking that I was going to weld in the house LOL. I said no I am redoing the power cable and adding the circuit breaker to it but no NOT welding in the house. I laughed and said I might maybe be crazy but definitely NOT stupid.HF 90 Amp Flux Core Customized.

Reply:Originally Posted by SlobYes it would be. I have a 36KBTU burner from an old water heater which works very well also; but I forgot where I've stuck it in the shop. I've used that burner for a forge, stress reliever/normalizer (with oxygen supply), and solder station and it works quite well. There is about 92KBTU per gallon of propane so a 20 pound tank of the fuel will run about 8.66 hours constant on high burn rate.
Reply:Reminds me of the joke about the hill billy that goes to the store to buy his wife an electric blanket.   The salesman starts talking about wattages and BTU's until the hill billy is just completely confused.   Finally the hill billy interrupts him and  says..."look, all I know is that I need a blanket with enough BTU's to heat a BUTT the size of a TUB.
Reply:Originally Posted by MinnesotaDaveUsing 20lb tanks it's easier to use 21,600 btu/lb in the calculations.I come up with 12 hours burn time theoretical for a 36,000 btu burner.

Reply:Originally Posted by SlobIt may be of the different locale but LP here weighs 5.92# per gallon and averages ~92K per gallon. I'm certain there are different blends and formulations and I don't know how accurate my burner is, but it won't run 10 hours on a full tank.
Reply:Originally Posted by MinnesotaDaveGood point on the different blends, ours runs 4.24 lb/gallon at 60 deg F.

Reply:Minus 25F here this morning, the restaurants and other high users use a vaporizer to keep up at low temps. Some of the pre-heaters for the incoming air venting the grill area can be 500,000 btu and more.Propane boils and makes vapor down to -40 but around -25 to -30 it doesn't make vapor very fast. Some areas use buried propane tanks since the ground is warmer than the air.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
