dimensions on the die for bending coupons

I'm in class and they have no way to bend your coupon to check it, the school that I went before does, the teacher told me they don't want to buy one, I'm just going to make one myself. I would like to get some dimensions if anyone has any, I'm not going to attempt my la city practical till I can bend and check my practice pieces to make sure I am really ready. also while I'm on the subject, my teach tells me that you weave the entire fill, no stringers on 3g position, is that standard?

Reply:thankyou for digging that up, but correct me if I'm wrong, you couldn't bend material with the one you have pictured that is thicker than .20" ? maybe I'm just not seeing it right? LA City is 1" plate bent to check the root, the fill and the cover pass... I THINK
Reply:The pic is for bending 3/8 thick coupons to 20% strain, which is appropriate for low carbon steel. The radius of the nose of the mandrel and the inside of the die will be different for different thicknesses, and also vary with the material to be bent based on the required strain in testing. For a 1" plate, the coupons (2 to 4 of them, depending on the code the test is to meet) will likely be side bent: a strip 3/8" wide is cut from the test piece and bent the thin way, straining the root, fill, and cover metal all at once. For thin material, the coupons are often bent for face and root: one with the face (cover) on the outside, and one with the root on the outside (or two of each, depending on test and code)The coupons are usually smoothed with a grinder before bending, and the hard corners rounded to about a 1/32" to 1/16" radius, to help make indications visible and prevent tearing at the corners where there are no flaws.
