I put the old G-258 welder in the unheated shed a few days ago knowing it was going to be cold and I wouldn't be needing it. Looking at the thermometer yesterday morning and it displaying the outside temp was -12f, I decided to see if it would start. I opened the fuel, pulled the choke, mashed the starter button and the engine cranked with the fan blade rotating six times, (I have an index dot on one blade) and then roared to life. After running at high idle about 30 seconds, it settled to it's 900 rpm low idle speed with just a bit of choke still applied.Kinda hard to fault old technology in my eyes. Reply:I once had to fire a hand cranked SA 200 at 23 below... after heating the engine with a rosebud. After that I spent the bucks for the special "shaved side" Delco starter that machine took.
Reply:My old Hobart G-213 is hand crank if the batteries are low but it starts easily. Can't say in all the years I've had to hand crank it when temp was this low but have when water puddles are frozen. Reply:The few "old" Hobarts I welded with years ago were really every bit as good a welder as the SA 200. They're simple to find the "sweet spot" for pipe. If I'm not mistaken the ones I used were all higher amps than The SA 200s & I know we used a couple of them to gouge.
