Tools needed

Hello everyone.I'm new to the forum and need a little info.  I have spent the last couple of weeks looking through most of the threads on here, and I can't find what I'm looking for.  I just graduated from welding school and I plan to get a job as a helper/fitter untill I learn the ropes.  As I go I want to start buying the equipment I will need for my own truck.  So what tools would I need and what do you all keep on your trucks?  Thanks for the help.
Reply:If ye a welder start from welding equipment, if ye a mechanic start from tools such as socket and stuff...It is always nice to get out in the real world and see some established shed have in their boxes... If you set structural columns a good lazer level is almost manditory to set base plates. Core drill, mag drill or demo saw, I know guys who have never used one and others that use then almost daily. However if you need one they are almost imposible to work without, though rentals can get you by for one time uses.Keep your eyes open at auctions, yard sales, used tool outlets and pawn shops. I frequently pick up good deals on oddball seldom used tools there. Some times it only takes one job to pay for a specialized tool. I just snagged a manual pipe threader with 1 1/4", 1 1/2" and 2" dies for $40 gambling I'd get one job. I had 2 old 4' lengths of 2" pipe left in stock, that I cut down and threaded 8 nipples for a job. Paid for the threader and I still came out $25 ahead on the job vs just buying threaded nipples.
Reply:Well, here is my two cents. All the same tools you will use in a shop, you will need on your truck. Of course, bandsaws and drill presses are a little big, so think about other ways to do things in the field. Mag base drills, porta-bands, saws-alls those kinda tools. Shop at pawn shops, classifieds, craigslist for the best deals. Bad economy makes for good deals. But, watch out for those "to good to be true" deals. You maybe buying someones stolen tools. Not cool!
Reply:my first welder was a lincoln weld pac 100 had it allmost 20 year then i got a 225 bobcat in 1996but then you where limited now my first welder would be the passport plus 110 or 220 and aspool gun to weld alum or the dynasty 200 dx110 to 460 1 phase or 3 phase i bought the200 to tig weld buti found out its the best stickwelder ive ever used i did a job in a restaurantwherei did some ss and alum work and all with stickwith the 200 all i needed was rods and a grinderused the caddy instead of the truck

Reply:I can't live with out at least two 16" Bessey L clamps.  mine are made by Wilton.  I can't remember the model letter.  A hot or line saw.  a porta-band a 7" grinder.  Become an expert with a torch/plaz, layout, dividers, steel rule, and SAFETY.
Reply:A tool belt has changed my life.  I think every journeyman should be required to wear a tool belt.
