Reply:I hate computers... Tried to put this up on iPad couldent load pic, did it on wife's laptop couldent add any text ??? Anyways these are going to be lead reels for my rig truck. I used trailer spindles and hubs, the hubs I machined down to fit inside the 3" pipe 1/4" wall 16" long. The sides will be harrow disc blades ( pick those up tommorow ) . The hub will be plug welded in the pipe I will also drill a 3/4" hole to access the cotter pin in the castle nut. Each post that the reels will be on will be isolated with the pos or neg attached to it and the cable attached to the pipe. I don't know how much lead these will hold but it will be quite a bit..
Reply:Might want to do a little research on using steel cores on reels. If you unreel completely each time then no big deal, otherwise a lot of heat is generated on the inner layers, a lot of magnetic interference too. If its not too late, just figure out how to use aluminum pipe and side flanges.
Reply:I guess I'm lazy...I went to harbor freight and bought 2 cheap air hose reels and put my leads on them. They are hot all the time, I isolated them from the skid with a cut up mud flap and some nylon bushings and washers.Cost was $38? Ea and they came with 30' of air hose they hold 100' of 1/0
Reply:Have to agree on the heat and magnetic interference walker talks about. The magnetic problem It's not as bad on older pure dc machines. It really messed with my vantage . Caused some crazy arc wandering and made my dig control useless. . But my buddy has some and nothin wrong with them. Good build though.Last edited by specopswelder; 09-08-2013 at 08:36 PM.
Reply:My machine is an 85 sa 250d not many electronics to mess with, seems like you would have to be running really hard to over heat your leads ie 1/4" all day or air arcing all day in witch case I would be stringing out the shortest leads I could. After they are finished I will watch for these problems and I sure appreciate your suggestions Amc sometimes hf is great aren't they but it sure is cool to build something super solid that will hopefully be used for a lifetime and then some.7a7 I thought the harrow disks would not only look real nice but rolling outward might be a little more functional
Reply:I'll be watching this thread.......I had some 14" disks made and now I'm trying to decide the dia of pipe to use between them and also I have 2 ideas to mount them and just can't decide. So my skid is on hold for now.....Miller 252Miller Bobcat 225Lincoln MigPak 1801959 Hyster forkliftHarris OA torch

They have been on 4 different welders and I haven't had any problems. One thing you should try to do is build them into a cabinet or box so you can keep the leads out of the weather. It will make the leads last 20 times as long as being out in the weather every day.
Reply:I thought I would have some reinforced bags w pockets for cables made. Until I can build a bed my rig is a bath tub and boxs might be more difficult for now.
Reply:Couldent get the harrow discs today they will be in wensday.
Reply:So, everyone talking about magnetic field problems and heat issues, are you saying not to use reels, or is there a different way to do it? I was thinking about reels for a trailblazer similar to his design.
Reply:Just use aluminum, or spool out all the wire all the time.
Reply:So I got the disks a day late but still got the reels put together last sunday here is how the reels look, havent painted them yet will probably be black.
Reply:I bought them at a local John deer dealer for 18 or 19 dollars each.
