I did search the board and looked all the other postings, but one question that didnt get answered is, the ring roller from shop out fitters all that much better from them vs the HF ring roller.  I have the HF and not real thrilled with it and spent along time last night looking for others.  I did not have any luck finding any that seemed to be better, in fact they all looked to be the same as the HF roller but higher in price. I did see where others have built there own but I would like one that will roll the smaller rings.  Has anyone found anything that is better than the HF?  I did look at the shop out fitters that is 5 times the cost. Let me know what you guys have found. Thanks
Reply:http://shopoutfitters.com/1415-planetary-ring-roller/This is the ring roller I have. I have so far rolled some 4000 feet of FB 1/4" x 1 1/2" some HHR in 1/2" and 3/8" some 2" x 3/16"  It is holding up nicely. I would recommend this to anyone needing a long lasting tool.
Reply:I read in the older postes that you had bought that one but, have you been able to compair that one to the HF?  I was surprised that there are several that sell the same roller as the HF one, but with prices that go up to 200.00.  However I was not able to find any that duplicated the SOF one.  I got to figure that SOF has that build locked up on that one, unless someone has found one that works real well for a decent price.

Reply:ya I know what you mean about the HF vs the American stuff, just cant figure if the SOF is made here vs there.  It does look to be a very nice unit and much more stought than the HF, jst wish the price was a little lower.
Reply:I can't say for sure that the SOF roller is made in USA but it sure is nicely built. I could not fab it as nice for the same price unless I was making a 100 or more.
Reply:I hear ya on that, I was hoping that others might have some input, I know it is an old subject but thought that maybe someone new might have moreto ad.
Reply:I'm still saving up some funds for the SOF, I currently have the HF unit and have been using it for the past year. The major drawback, is the HF has dimples on their rollers, that there puts them into your work piece and ruins it depending on the application. For me it has served it's duty and i think it is only good for rolling round bar but even then you might get some dimples into the bar as well. I only use to make firepit rings but will be painted over with a hammered finish to hide the dimples. In the end, is it worth it?It all depends on the quality you are trying to achieve, with the HF you get nasty looking dimples, with the SOF you get a smooth finish.
Reply:I can take some photos of some scrap that I have from the HF leaving these dimples on both flat bar and solid bar.
Reply:I have the HF unit and agree that it leaves the marks from the rollers, it also has a major problem by not tracking straight.  I have applied presure when rolling to keep the piece straight to no avail, that is the reason for looking for a better quality roller.
Reply:Here is a thread with just about anything you want to know about a HF ring roller. You can get different dies and even shows how to put an electric drive on it.http://img1.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=737981http://www.swagoffroad.com/Last edited by Scott0303; 07-10-2012 at 08:42 AM.
Reply:Y'all ain't usin yur hf roller anuf.  My "Hardened" knurls flattened and wore off.  If the experience of stepping up is anything like when I replaced my hf compact bender with my American Bender for about 10 x the price, then the SOF roller if worth the money.  No modifying to get the job done, larger capacity, better quality tool, no tracking issues...

Reply:I am rolling flat stock in to rings, the HF unit will not track straight like others have mentioned.
Reply:Hi Fat Bastard. I need a ring roller for aluminum flat bar 1/4" X 2". Specs say only goes up to 3/16" X 1 1/2" and Shop Outfitters customer service say roller physically roll beyond 1 1/2" but the video for this 1415 roller looks like 2" would be fine. You said you did some 2". Can you let me know whether you think this will work for my needs. Thanks. David
