Pig Smoker Question

Wanna make a tow behind Smoker like i seen on this site. I Want to know if i can actually BURN out oil from a used oil tank.  I don't think it sounds to safe, and have seen some old ones converted.  Just don't wanna spend the $$$ on a new tank just to cut it up.  Any opinions or suggestions on Using an OLD Tank and Burning it clean or just going NEW.  Or even Will a Propane Tank be better and what size do people Suggest.  Im From the Outskirts of Philly so i aint a True Country Boy and could use some HELP!!! Reply:get it raging hot inside and carry on IMO.  I don't see the big difference between LPG or diesel as far as contamination goes.  That's my non-technical answer.  Tons of those cookers around here, all former oil tanks.

Reply:You say season it. Do you mean with vegetable oil ? And what's the best way to make sure there's now oil. Keep filling and draining it with water?  That can't be to EPA freindly. Reply:I like that design. The one we used to have was turned the other way. It's been way too many years, but I'm pretty sure ours was a "repurposed" one that had been burned out really well..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Ain't nothing in the oil going to put more carcinogens (yup that's spelled wrong, but I don't GAF) in the food than the fuels that you are smoking the meat with anyway. and if you burn it out really hot you'll burn out anything that would have burned out at the lower smoking temps anyway. just get her good and hot. I used a leaf blower to add air to get the fire as hot as possible. worked a charm.you should drain as much oil as possible before doing this. no point in adding more crap to the air as you need too. Gonna flood it next week and I guess Use a cutting wheel.  Really wanna use my Plasma but. Reply:I can't say I consider an abrasive wheel that much safer than the plasma.   I'd fill it up with water and tip it so that you can cut in what little air space there is and get at least one nice long cut ripped before the water drains.  That way, in the event of a "woof" of the fumes, it can release some pressure out the gap and not try to explode.  That's what I aim for at least, to get a big hole cut in it with as little air space as possible, after that, it's no longer enclosed.

In fact used one go at quite a price because of the texas smoker barbecue builds.I recommend you use an old propane tank for your build.Good lick. Reply:Here is the one I built last winter.  Used a 250 gal propane tank.  I also follow the Smoke Ring web site.  I let my tank set open with all plugs out for a month then purged with the tail pipe off the truck while cutting with a waffer wheel.  On diesel tanks I use a sawz-all. Dan

Not as large as a residential tank, but it is larger than my first horizontal smoker.City of L.A.
