I figured this would be a good way to get some real-world practice in and end up with something i really do need for the garage. Perhaps it would be better to call this a "wheeled stand" rather than a cart though, since it lacks the rough terrain capability a lot of people here think a welding cart needs. I mean, I like off-roading as much as the next guy, but I don't ever plan on bringing my tig welder with me! A concern of mine was the depth of the welder, which is about 24". I wanted to make a compact package that I could park against the wall and not have jutting out into my workspace too far. This meant mounting the gas bottle to the side of the welder, not in behind. All of this was cut out with my $80 Princess Auto porta-band, which performed quite well!My design was 2" square tube, 1/16" wall, with a cradle for the welder made out of 2" angle, 100% welded with the tig.So it turns out the cheap porta-band doesn't have the capacity to cut a 45° on 2" tube.... I had to make these cuts with a hacksaw using a homemade wooden mitre box. Not the greatest results, but it did the job....You can clearly see the gap I had to deal with on the mitres in this pic....So the basic structure of the cart is finished, with a .25" tread plate platform on the back corner for the gas bottle. I plan to add a drawer underneath the welder, and use the other areas as shelving for my welding gear.
Reply:Next I fabbed up some caster mounting pads and welded them on.I know these beads aren't that great, but I'm still learning! I've found that if I make a ****ty bead and can usually pulse back over it with the pedal and improve its aesthetics...At this point I also had the expanded metal shelving welded in.Now, time for the drawer! I had some scrap sheet lying around, and decided to use the .25" tread for the drawer face. The slides I bought at Lowes.Last edited by Advan; 09-01-2013 at 10:01 AM.
Reply:A drawer is an excellent idea!
Reply:So that about does it, besides some finishing touches like cable hangers on the right side and some fine-tuning of the drawer mechanism. (not easy to get everything straight and flush!) I also ended up making a little well to store 1lb tubes of tig wire and welding some chain links to the frame to hold the bottle in with a ratchet strap.Three cable hangers ended up being enough to store my ground cable, stick stinger, and my 9 and 17 torches neatly out of the way, yet still easy to get to.
Reply:I like your design, wider instead of deeper and that drawer is a great addition. Good job on the welds also.
Reply:Very nice.
Reply:What you got in that brown box under your table?

Reply:Really nice design. I appreciate that you took the time to share. Your fab table looks just like mine, with the exception of the casters. Mine's on leveling feet. Reply:Killer design. I am really diggin the offset tank and drawer. Reply:Never thought of the side by side to save space. My old cart I built for my mig welder back in the 70s has the bottle at the back and it takes up a lot of space to park it. hmmmmmmm I think I could modify it and save some room. A great looking project. richey
Reply:Great job! I like the idea of "squaring it up", and probably should do the same for my HH140 - after all, I've tried everything else! My problem? Damn bottle of C25 is 275cf!!! Almost 5' tall with the flowmeter and 125 lbs.
Reply:Nice! Thanks for sharing.
Reply:You have more time on your hands than I do....Ya done yourself GOOD!Little overkill never hurt anyone and that will last forever.Continue working on your welds..they look good but concentrate on your weld ends a little more.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Very cool design, The drawer idea is a great addition, I may "borrow" some of your design ideas, hope you don't mind.

Reply:Great looking cart! What gauge sheet metal did you use for the drawer? I'm have 2 upcoming projects that will have drawers and am interested in what gauge would be best for 12" wide, 24" wide, and 36" wide drawers. I'm thinking of using 18 ga for 12", 16 ga for 24" and 14 ga for 36"...GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.

Reply:Thanks for the info! Somewhere between 16 and 12 gauge depending on paint thickness (it can build up fast).I like 'sturdy as a boulder' - I build things like they are never going to be moved. GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference. |
