Has anyone else seen this? He thinks just because he has UV resistant glasses he's good to weld. He still watches the puddle and that arc is going to make him go blind... If i'm wrong someone please correct me?"Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. They are the American people's Liberty, Teeth, and Keystone under Independence." - George Washington

Reply:On an open root e erything goes inside the pipe. I'm not saying its safe, but the guy pretty well has his **** together when it comes to pipe. All he does is make paper and spend his money on welders and pipe so he can weld at home. Sometimes he comes off a little eccentric, like maybe he's been in the woods too long, but one thing is for sure....when it comes to pipe he's a badass!

Reply:He must be an independent contractor cuz any employer with 1/2 a brain would fire him in an instant.   do you know how much you workers comp would have to pay for a blind person for life and not to mention civil liability for letting a welder weld without a hood.  BTW the employer is basically always at fault because we litigate stupid and it pays lawyers well.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250

Reply:I've mentioned it before in another thread, but he's a bit like Uncle Ted (Nugent). Maybe a bit out there, but has buttloads of talent at his craft like Ted has with guitar. Reply:he could take some lessons from this guy.XMT 350 MPa, w/D52-DTA 185 TSWHarris ofHe definitely knows how to weld. That's a nice result he shows in the vid. But,If he goes blind, then the taxpayers have to support him when he goes on disability. And,I hope he reads a few good books before he goes blind, then perhaps he can expand his vocabulary beyond the "F" word. How many young/beginner welders are going watch this video, and imitate him, and damage their eyesight ? Very irresponsible video. Shame on him.

Reply:I think he's just trying to prove you can lay a good weld using sound and settings.  I know it would be wrong, but I'm sure he doesn't do it that way in the field.  I have to admit I mig a lot by closed eyes and sound, at least for tacking. I know it's wrong, but I'm sure you guy's do it too.  I don't think I could do a pipe that way though. And welders overseas, they are lucky to have sunglasses.  When they get hurt, they get replaced.  I've seen laborers stomping cowhides in acid overseas until their skin starts to fall off, when they are hurt, they just grab another pakistani. Gotta make those supple leather capes and glove for us! Believe me, I'm not saying it's right, but I know everyone here has tacked up stuff without a hood, or welded without gloves.
Reply:If you ever work in refineries, where there may be hundreds of pipe welders, you'll see them carry on conversation with their fitters with their hoods up. None of them do it for very long. As already been said, when doing the root pass the arc, sparks, and light are all inside the pipe.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:I've seen Mexican bridge workers welding rebars with no hood or even glasses.  They just positioned themselves and closed their eyes. They were on the top of "bent" columns 20' feet off the ground, 6-guys each working off different leads.  They only had one ladder too.  It's obvious that contractor did not care about the long term health of his workers, men were cheaper than proper eye and fall protection, not to mention ladders.  In Caltrans specification, structural rebar joints are tied, never welded as welding could reduce strength.
Reply:I'm gonna start practicing welding with no hood! It is a big annoyance, would be great to get rid of it! I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Reply:I really like the videos that Thornton aka fieldres puts out. My 2 favorites are "you ain't better than me Ricky" and the 3 parter about the sa300 oil change kit. He just tickles me stupid. The only 2 YouTube channel I sub are his and Jody's. Better than real tv anyway…I have one of those Jackson nexgen helmets and it can get to be a real pain in the *** turning it in and off so that I don't waste the batteries that are $15/pr. So I do make tacks on sheet metal with no hood on occasionally. But only if I can shield my face from the arc with my other hand, and by shield I mean cover the cup as much as I can with my hand. Ive made the mistake before and i dont plan to make it again. Its hard to even to sleep when youve got the flash burn. Another option I found if I need my other hand to hold the part frequently while I'm tacking it is to leave the lens turned off on my hood and close my eyes. Like a good kansas citian, I'm goin to eat some bbq. -rgfab

Reply:I tell all the office girls we work naked in the shop so we don't get farmers tans. It comes from a day when they walked in while we were all taking off scuba gear and some of them believe the rumor. They don't come up without calling now. I've told them they are more than welcome to learn to weld, but every one is naked, it's the law.
