I got home and really had an urge to make something. I planned these speaker mounts in my head and just went at it. Tried something new - cutting aluminum on a wood miter saw. I have heard it works super well and... it does!Cutting aluminum on miter saw by Jon Kensy, on FlickrCutting aluminum on miter saw by Jon Kensy, on FlickrCheck out the fit up - can't beat itSpeaker mount fit up by Jon Kensy, on FlickrThrowing down the welds!Speaker mount welds by Jon Kensy, on FlickrThis is 3/16" aluminum both the base plates and the tubing. Pretty taxing on the welder, I just ran it wide open at 180A with a 3/32" tungsten and #10 cup on a WP17 torch.More welds downSpeaker mount welds by Jon Kensy, on FlickrSpeaker mount welds by Jon Kensy, on FlickrBoth plates welded onSpeaker mount both plates welded by Jon Kensy, on FlickrTest mounted on the wallSpeaker mount on wall by Jon Kensy, on FlickrYou'll notice that the two mounting holes are counter sunk for my wood screws. Also, there's a 1/2" or so hole drilled in the center of where the square tube meets each plate. This is because I am going to run the speaker wire through the mount up into the speaker terminals. This will be super sleek because there will be no visible wires. So now, all I have to do is put up insulation and drywall, prime, paint, and hang these puppies up!Miller Diversion 180Hobart Handler 140 (Soon to be replaced with Miller 211?)Miller Spectrum 625 Extreme
Reply:YEP! The miter saw works great, except for a VERY IMPORTANT omission. You really need to clamp the material to the fence. The wood speed is about right for aluminum and the carbides on most wood blades is permissible for cutting aluminum. The problem comes from when the saw catches a tooth and turns the materiel into a projectile. Reply:I clamped the work when I cut it. Just out of frame is a large C-clamp.Miller Diversion 180Hobart Handler 140 (Soon to be replaced with Miller 211?)Miller Spectrum 625 Extreme
Reply:I don't use my rage saw any more because the clamps suck and even if you think it's tight enough, it will still grab something and launch it!Bandsaw or plasma is what I use as much as possible.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer |
