Reply:How much to buy them? Prices and terms vary by location.
Reply:500 bucks and i can't afford that
Reply:Bigger tanks are way cheaper to fill per CF, and you have to make trips to fill them less often, so buy the biggest you can store/move. Where are you located? In my area, $180 would get you a set of owned tanks used on craigslist easily. The shop just swaps them out anyway, so any ones you can find are fine as long as they are still sound and within date, or you don't mind paying a hydro fee ($15 at my LWS) for out of date. You might even get bottles with gas still in them! I always just swapped them out right away, because they were dirty and I didn't trust the valves not to have junk in them which would gum up my regs. Also consider a bigger O2 tank than acetylene. Cutting especially uses O2 much faster than fuel, it's normal to have a 180 or 200 cf O2 sitting next to a 80cf fuel. That's what is strapped to the wall in my garage (paid $100), and I have a cart with 40cf sized tanks for moving around. It's used for brazing mostly as a 40cf acetylene tank can't run a cutting or big welding tip for long. $180 doesn't sound like much, but if you keep the tanks for 2 years, the owned tanks would have paid for a second torch, or a whole lot of steel. |
