Reply:Soo I had to do a small repair job on a railing today. Nothing fancy just a handrail that someone hit with the snowplow, (so they say...) Cut out old broken section, re-coped existing pipe to fit. Welded new section on place,A little grinding a little dynafile, can of spray paint, some anchor tight and its good as new :$1 5/8" tubing, 3/32 6011 run with trailblazer 302 on 55-65amps
Reply:2 more pics and sorry for the sideways pics, I gotta figure out how to get them straight next time -bill

Reply:A dab- i stick welded it using 6010 with a 7018 cap pass Mike- thanks alot the customer just wanted it to hold and wanted it done fast so thats what they got haha, only some much that you can do with welding on rust with more rust in it lol, as you can see my tig on clean material is a little nicer haha, yes i could have held the corners a little longer and smoothes it out some but when you have someone watching you and every 10 min they wanna know how mich longer, thats the result.
Reply:I'll give you a big thumbs up on the aluminum welding, joining 18 gage to 1" material. That type of weld in aluminum is not something I'd care to attempt without a lot of practice prior to working on the actual pieces.I asked about the beam because it was a mess and the repair(size/shape of plate and bead placement) is not one I've seen before. I'm not sure what that beam is holding up. But given the shape it was in, I'm surprised it didn't buckle under the weight of all the rust. I'll offer you the same advice I got from a friend in this business, make sure you know what you're doing before you tackle major structural or pressure piping work. Whoever touched it last owns it, if something ever goes wrong. I'm not clear if your working for yourself or someone else. If the former, you need to make sure you've got all your ducks in a row on every job. If you work for someone else, then at least you have some cover and they're responsible if something doesn't turn out right.I'm feeling a little preachy now, so I'll get down off my soapbox. I'll finish out by saying welcome to the forum and keep posting photos of your work.... Reply:Well built, well repaired and looking good as new. Thanks for sharing. Great job!
Reply:Adab- thanks on the aluminum, i try my best to do good work! And on the i beam repair it was actually the main supports holding up tht wall and the roof, my boss gave me a shop drawing and breif desription and told me to do it like that so thats what i did, yes the welds could have been better but the customer was happy, so i guesse thats a good thing, Ironman- appreceiate it man, ill try to get some more pics up soon of some other things -bill
Reply:Not being a welder just a hobby welder.I will comment on the I beam also. Everything else looks great.I believe the weld could have been a little better on the I beam or maybe a second pass. To add to what has already been said, it is a huge liability. Regardless of what the boss says, or more importantly what the customer says it needs to be done right.Where you said the customer was happy, I probably could have done the same with my 110 mig and the customer would have been happy. Good repair. Yeah for about 10 minutes. What the customer thinks is not what you know. You have to protect yourself, some jobs are not worth the risk, hassle, or time.
Reply:Sorry but everytime i look at that I beam repair i shudder and i will tell you why Did you notice the the top and bottom ( left and right ) have bulged out from straight that shows the the plates are under stress that are not being addressed with that repair it only covers up the fact that the web has rusted in twoThat fix don't cut itLast edited by killdozerd11; 10-18-2013 at 09:26 PM.Backed my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me What would SATAN do ?? Reply:Kcb / dozerd As to what both of you said, i totally understand what your saying, and probably would have done it different myself, but im just doing what my boss says, i put in my opinions on the project and he said do it like that, so thats what i did... Dozerd- as to the bulging on the beam, all i have to add is this pic, The plate on the floor is level and straight.
Reply:Maybe I missed it, but what's the first thing you made?
Reply:Strangedex- the first thing as in what? The first thing ive ever made or the first thing i put on here?

Reply:I was wondering about the first set of pics you put up in this thread. It looks like a jig table of some sort but what do I know.
Reply:I cant really say to much due to confidentiality, but yes it is a jig table of sorts and has to do with the making of smartphones. The whole table is fully welded with all "flat" welds ground smooth to parent metal. Half mig and half tig all around and will weigh approx 4,500 lbs when finished. All of the bosses on top get machined down .002 then drilled and tapped. Heres another picture of it a little more completed |
