Needing to put an extension onto the mouth of an 1100 gal. tank using a 55 gal. barrel. Wondering where the best buy on a few rods might be, plus wondering if there'd be any reason I couldn't cut strips out of 5 gal. buckets for this.
Reply:I used Urethane Supply Co for all my filler material for plastic bumper repair when I did auto body. The pricing on their filler rid is very reasonable, and I'm sure you'll find using a uniform filler rod much easier than using strips of bucket. http:// http://www.urethanesupply.com/HDPE-1/

Reply:Not really applicable, but U.S. plastic rod suppliers are pricey for us Canucks. I deal with these guys in the U.K., they ship worldwide, and cheaper than any U.S. supplier I contacted:http://www.plasticsolutionsuk.com/
Reply:Also string trimmer line works good on some repairs. Pretty sure most of it is HDPE. Bear in mind that not all plastics are equal, you have to know what you are welding and use the same type of rod.

Reply:I have tried to weld HDPE and just get a charred, sunken, overheated mess with no strength. If anyone has good instructional material let me know! I am using a top of the line seely hot air welder with HDPE rod from urethane supply. I have watched Utube video's, but I still can't get it.Last edited by blackbart; 02-02-2015 at 09:25 PM.
Reply:you have to clean both what you are welding and the hdpe strip, it gets a coating on it like almost no stick..Of all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...
Reply:We used to weld little plastic soldiers together by lighting an old detergent bottle on fire and dripping it on them. It sounded like VOOP, VOOP, VOOP if you held it high enough as you dripped it on them. Got good fusion, especially if you got some on your hand or arm. Many a kid still wears those badges.Kidding aside, I believe HDPE welding requires substantial pressure to effect a weld. Think forge welding, not melting a couple candles together. Heat AND pressure.Last edited by Oldendum; 02-02-2015 at 10:36 PM."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
