I tend to run .023-.025 in my MIG, and need a new roll before too long. I noticed that my LWS has both S-3 and S-6 wire, and was wondering if there's any reason to go with one rather than the other. This is mostly with CO2 on thin-ish material. I know C25 works better, but I have the big tanks already for CO2...Lincoln 175HD
Reply:S-6 wire has more Silicon in the filler metal.  The higher silicon level makes for a more fluid puddle that wets easier.  The silicon also provides more deoxidizing action to bind with contaminants and float them to the top of the weld pool. The downside is the more fluid puddle created by S-6 filler metal can be harder to weld out of position.  The S-3 wire stays were you put it when welding overhead and vertical.  The S-6 will also have more silicon islands on the finished bead; so more to cleanup before finishing.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
Reply:to make it short and sweet..... It has more cleaning agents in the 6 wire.
