I Bench tested my old Idealarc 250-250 tombstone welder I had just got couple weeks ago. It is a oldie (1967). I had taken all the covers off to blow out and clean inside. amazing how good it looks inside being that old. I did clean it and today I thought I'd just turn it on to see if fan ran good. It did, but noticed everytime you turn switch 'on' or 'off' it showed small spark at the contacts inside the switch. I assume that is normall as you wouldn't see it if covers were on? Also- I heard their is a procedure to check the lead terminals for Volts? Do you just turn machine on and put meter on the flat metal strap ends for leads? I'd like to check before covers go back on. I assume needs to be on AC right? Please explain this or tell me where to find the step by step procedure- THANKS!
Reply:All switches will spark a little when opened or closed.I see a small spark when I plug in my coffee maker. You had better not try any testing.A drop of oil on the fan bearings would be good.240 volts hits hard and can burn the skin.Dont assume anything, know what you are doing with electricity.
Reply:Some arcing of the switch is normal at the contacts. You can clean them with some carb cleaner and a small brush or swab if they're really nasty. Put a little white lithium grease on them and call it good.Expert Garage Hack....https://www.facebook.com/steven.webber.948 |
