Welding jacket

I will be welding this summer and will be wearing my uniform on our farm but dont want a long sleeve shirt. Reply:I like using long sleeve cotton shirts.  You can mist some water on it.  Keep your gloves dry to avoid shocks when changing rods.  This works well for me.If you can't keep your gloves dry (too much sweat, or whatever), take a small block of wood or plastic.  Drill a hole in it a little larger than your rod.  Drill a blind hole only about halfway through.  Then you can use this as an insulating handle to put rods in your stinger.You need to be covered to avoid getting arc burn.  You might as well cover with the lightest material you can.  Leather sleeves or jackets will just be heavier and hotter than a cotton shirt.I have been arc burned because my shirt was too thin.  I was a little pink on my chest except for two pockets and the strip down the middle where the buttons go.  My wife was really amused at this.Last edited by AndyA; 02-04-2015 at 10:02 PM.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE

Reply:What you do has a big bearing on the type of PPE you choose. For small projects in summer I also wear cotton work shirts many times for light duty welding. I have a set of leather sleeves I was given on one job years ago from one of the welders when the job ended. Personally I don't use them much. If I'm going to be under something or welding vertical or overhead, I'll often tough it out and wear the full leather coat. I don't do enough to get one of the fabric jackets with the leather arms, but I know a few guys who prefer these in hot weather..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I have a Tillman long sleeve welding shirt that works pretty well. I believe it's FR cotton, black in color and not much thicker than a Dickies work shirt. It deflects most spatter but occasionally you'll get some burn through if you're welding overhead. I think I paid about $30 for it.

Reply:I use a cotton welding jacket in warm weather,leather jacket in cold weather.A short leather apron will keep red hot steel off the family jewels.
