Hi,I have the opportunity to install 240v power to my garage before I finish the basement. I am new to welding and was wondering what is the correct size of wire and breaker I should run for my miller maxstar 200str? SincerelyBjörk
Reply:Look on the back of the maxstar. It should tell you it's max amps for the voltage required. The size of wire is based off of the amps required and the distance it has to run from your breaker box.Regards,RobGreat Basin WeldingInstagramBlue weldersRed weldersMy luscious Table DIY TIG Torch cooler
Reply:The information will be listed in your Owner's Manual. If you no longer have one, Miller has a downloadable manual online.http://www.millerwelds.com/service/l...&submit=SearchLincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.
Reply:I believe that's a 40 amp input welder. You'd need 40 amp breaker with 8 gauge copper wire. If you are just wiring the garage I'd put in a 50 amp breaker and 6 gauge copper to build for the future.Lincoln ac tombstoneeverlast powerarc 300ST

Reply:If I plan to upgrade would a 40/or 50 amp breaker and 6 gauge hurt anything?
Reply:Its only about a 20' run
Reply:Use a 50 or 60 amp breaker and at least 8 gauge wire. That way you won't have to add a circuit, run another wire if you get a bigger machine later on.6 gauge would be even better.Don't use aluminum wire.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder

Reply:Originally Posted by DSWNo. The breaker just protects the wires in the wall, not the machine. I run my 230v 26 amp rated Miller mig off my 6g wired, 50 amp circuit that I also use for my Hypertherm plasma or my Syncrowave 200 with no problems.

Reply:If you want to plan for the future and make everyone happy…6g wire & a 6-50r (receptacle)For your current machine install a 30amp breaker. If you then purchase anutter machine that requires 40amp Breaker.. install a 40amp Breaker etc until you get to 50amp….Then we can have the ol' discussion of running a bigger breaker on the 6g YEEHAWW!!!!!!!!Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:I was only pointing out that breakers do protect both equipment and line. Ya'll can have at it on advice. Thanks.
Reply:6g wire, 6-50r, and a 30amp breaker it is. Thank you very much Broccoli1

Reply:Originally Posted by BjörkNm I'm not sure what I am speaking ofAs mentioned before, a breaker protects nothing but the wiring in the circuit. Buy enough six gauge wire to make your run (I always add 10% or so for a little extra) get a 50 amp breaker and a 6-50 receptacle. This is more than enough capacity for the welder and will allow you to get a bigger machine in the future without having to tear everything out and start over.

Reply:70% caused by fixed wiring and not appliances you say .....and i say breakers help keep appliances from burning up .....guess we mean the same

Reply:It may be coincidence, but many of the 230V welders use a power switch that looks just like a circuit breaker.   Since most high powered devices used to have fuses, the CB as a switch may be the current design.Dan----------------------------Measure twice.  Weld once.  Grind to size.MIG:  Lincoln SP100 TIG/STICK:  AHP Alphatig 200X
Reply:Run conduit so you can upgrade when needed.
Reply:Its going in a stud wall behind drywall not a straight run. Whatever I put in is there to stay.
