We are moving across the country in about a week.  I have an old 250 gallon LPG tank.  I was going to build a big BBQ pit out of it but now it's going to the scrap yard.  Anyway I want to cut the ends off and make them into fire pits at our new place.  I have already removed the valves and filled it up with water.  Like we usually do.  However I completely forgot about this tank before I turned in the tanks for my torch.  Would I be better off using a grinder with a cutting wheel or doing something like gouging it with 5/32 6011?  I really don't care about the quality if cut I'm going to cut it a couple inches above where I was originally going to cut it.  Once I get new tanks I will make the final cut cleaning everything up.  Anyway what would you do?Miller Maxstar 200 strMontgomery Ward 250 AC/DC
Reply:I'd cut a large circle mid way on the tank with the gouge first. that way you can drain the water and cut the ends without having to worry about water coming out of the cuts. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger

Reply:I cut the end off a 1000 gal tank with a 7 inch grinder one time. Water and grinding dust made a mess of my clothes. Everything was rusted stiff the next day!Miller trailblazer301gLincoln sa200Miller251Miller spectrum 625Victor oxy-acc2002 Chevy duramax 3500 dually 4x4

Reply:I would probably use my old gas concrete cutoff saw, with a metal cutting blade put on it. There good as long as the cuts don't have to be to precise. It might be worth it to rent one, depends on your exact situation.PROUD   AMERICAN

Reply:Add some bleach to it to neutralize the methyl mercaptan odorant otherwise you'll ruin your cloths, shoes, and possibly your marriage. Given the choice between abrasive cut off and gouging... I'd use the cut off. A metal cutting saw would only take minutes per end but I'm sure if you had one you wouldn't be asking.
Reply:Yea...air chisel. That's what I used to cut up my old 275 gal tank after it sprung a leak...was 40 years old though. You can get the gun and chisel set for about 30 or 40 bucks in a Campbell Hausfeld. That's what I have and it took only 15 min. to half it. Put some ear plugs in...and maybe headphones over those!  POVERTY...is the Mother of InventionMillermatic 211Millermatic 140Miller Thunderbolt XLArcOne 100STS inverter w/TIGThermal Dynamics 38XL Victor Oxy/AcetyleneJancy Slugger Holemaker IIJet 5x6 BandsawNever enough time & sleep.
Reply:SMC-Weldcraft How thick was your tank? Mine was 1/4 inch, I know some of the small ones are thinner but not that thin! Reply:Oh, didn't realize it was an oil tank. Thought we were talking about gas / LPG / propaneMiller trailblazer301gLincoln sa200Miller251Miller spectrum 625Victor oxy-acc2002 Chevy duramax 3500 dually 4x4

Reply:Sorry about the confusion..Was just making a point about the air chisel being a cheap and safer way to shear a tank open...POVERTY...is the Mother of InventionMillermatic 211Millermatic 140Miller Thunderbolt XLArcOne 100STS inverter w/TIGThermal Dynamics 38XL Victor Oxy/AcetyleneJancy Slugger Holemaker IIJet 5x6 BandsawNever enough time & sleep.
