Looking to weld up a cast part on the rear end of one of my tractors, I'll need to be able to machine it once it is welded, I know that with some of the cast rods machining is out of the question but I can't find any info on machinability of UTP 85 FN. Anyone know if you can cut it with a file or tool steel?Thanks,JAS1963 SA 200 Redface, rebuilt by me, bodywork by CEP Everlast 255EXT w/W300 coolerMiller 212 AutosetMiller Xtreme 375Bridgeport MillSouth Bend 9" Lathe
Reply:The UTP catalog doesn't say anything about machinability but says it's a "ferro-nickel" type. Typically they are not as machinable as the "nickel 99" type but better than the cheap steel type rods. The ferro-nickel type are generally recommended for heavy castings and larger welds; the nickel 99 type are meant for thin sections and short welds on castings that cannot be pre-heated.There are lots of threads here on cast iron welding, and lots of strong opinions about which methods are best.
