I was at a household, tool and workshop auction saturday. I picked up a few things, welding clamps, hand tools and sawhorses. stuff was going cheap. There was an oxy/acetylene cart and tanks with a pretty rough looking Harris torch but apparently it worked OK. I didn't need another OA and the last set I saw on an auction went for $300 so I was standing there shooting the bull with a guy I know, not paying attention, and the set WITH a 3rd tank, ALL FULL of gas, sold for $125! I heard the auctioneer trying to get another bid for 130 and I thought I must not have heard right, so I scooted in closer and asked somebody but I was too darn late!Jeez, I could have used the gas and then sold the tanks and still doubled money. I talked to the guy that bought them and he was giggling bug eyed happy. He said he didn't need it either but was thinking of either part it out and making some money or just keeping the tanks for spares.Oh well, I got some stuff cheap but it was kind of a face palm morning.
Reply:Last summer at two different auctions I bought 2 sets of tanks, 5 torches, 3 Victor, 1 Smith, 1 craftsman, and 4 sets of regulators for less than $500.That was in nd, was at an auction here in ne, thought I'd see if I could snag another oa setup for cheap, not here, went for $800.
Reply:I got my set about 15 years ago at an estate sale... Full bottles with regulators, 50' hoses, three large Victor torches, misc. tips/tools, extra 20' length of hoses, and a cart for $200. I didn't know anything about O/A at the time but even I knew that was a deal I couldn't pass up!Oh yeah, they also threw in a nearly new John Deere gas leaf blower!

Reply:You're right of course, but I could have either got a bargain or made him pay more for it.The regulators were on the tanks. I should have atleast checked the tank pressures and realized they were full and payed closer attention to the bidding.
Reply:I like auctions! The last one I was at everything was going for premium price though. Not many nice tool and machine auctions around me. |
