today i got a torch set off a buddy of mine for 50 bucks everything's in good shape but the torch it self needs to be cleaned and polished it's a brass torch so i know there's a way ucan shine it up  and make it look nice but i have no clue on how to do any thoughts ?
Reply:Flitz polishing paste.
Reply:Make darn sure you don't get anything inside the torch when you polish it. 100% O2 and any kind of oil grease or contaminants is asking for trouble. I'd leave the hoses attached or cover the connections with tape etc to make sure nothing gets inside..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Most of the refurb places tend to bead blast the brass to clean it up. I just had a torch and some regs done by http://www.regulatortorchrepair.com/Definitely keep any cleaning/polishing chemicals WELL away form the internals of the torch.
Reply:Those guys do good work. I highly recommend them if someone needs OA gear rebuilt..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:It won't cut or weld any better polished. It's the inside that needs to be in top shape right down to a new tip.                                 JMHO,                                           MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw

Reply:is it safe to submerge a torch if  you are concerned that there may be contaminants in the fittings? I was thinking of hosing the torch handle down to get the grit off.
Reply:I prefer the patina that years of use creates.  This also sends a message of "years of experience" instead of "just started yesterday" to customers and clients.Had an oxweld torch refurb'd once.  The guy spray painted it with gold paint, looked really nice.   Lasted a couple of weeks and then it looked like all the rest. Also, I don't like a brand new shiny thing, makes me think some crow will steal it."The reason we are here is that we are not all there"SA 200Idealarc TM 300 300MM 200MM 25130a SpoolgunPrecision Tig 375Invertec V350 ProSC-32 CS 12 Wire FeederOxweld/Purox O/AArcAirHypertherm Powermax 85LN25
Reply:Mig welder95Do nothing to the exterior  -  the torch doesn't have the value for reconditioning.A 40+ year old functioning torch with a vintage finish is a reliable purchase.A torch that has been polished means: it came from a yard sale, or the last auction.   Thank Mla2ofus for the imperative  -  It's the inside that needs to be in top shape right down to a new tip.Anyone that polishes a torch is telling the world that they don't know anything.Opus

Reply:Try Bar Keepers Friend cleanser.  It is cheap and very useful around the house.  I would wear gloves, as it contains Oxalic acid.  It will also remove light rust. http://www.barkeepersfriend.com/copper"USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
