Hey there,I'm new to welding, but I have always wanted to learn. I have a project with 1/4 inch steel and my little wire welder was not hot enough, so I found an old Forney C6 on craigslist and tried it out. Problem.....When using the negative ground, it only gives me a little spark and will not weld. I tried cleaning up the lower ground connection, but still just a spark. This welder has two other upper grounds marked 'Weld-Braze Low' and 'Weld-Braze High', so I tried each of them and it welded great.Question1.......Is it safe to use these ground connections to do regular welding?Question2.......Why does the welder need 2 separate grounds above to do brazing?Question3.......Can I get by using these upper ground connectors, or do I need to find a way to fix the lower one.thanks for any help you can give me.
Reply:One of these? The lower section is a battery charger isn't it?Last edited by MinnesotaDave; 02-16-2015 at 10:35 PM.Reason: Read it wrong the first time...Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:As I read your machine - each amperage tap has a high and low number on it.That's what your high and low ground do for you - it switches between the two amperages.Last edited by MinnesotaDave; 02-16-2015 at 10:35 PM.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:Yep, that is my machineSo most welding is supposed to use the very bottom ground plug? That is the one that does not work well for me.
Reply:The bottom of the machine is a battery charger. Those two that say "hi" and "low" are for welding.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:I want to make sure that it is ok to use the upper left left 'LOW GROUND' and the upper right 'HIGH GROUND' as my ground for regular welding, since it says WELDING-BRAZING..........it confuses me as to why the connection on the bottom is labeled '-ground'hope that made sensethanks

Reply:Oh, now I get it.........that bottom one is for battery charging........not weldingNow it makes sense to me thanks a millionhave a blessed weekken
