Hello everyone:   I've been making some aluminum tool and storage boxes for my own use and they're coming out fairly well (I'm still somewhat of a newbie to aluminum MIG welding).  One of the problems I'm finding is that there are no aluminum latches that I can use for locking these boxes.  Example:  lid hinges up and down.  When down, I need to lock it to protect valuables inside from someone stealing it.  Is anyone aware of aluminum latches that can be flipped down when the lid is down and have the ability to place a lock thru that latch?  I'm pursuing aluminum so I can weld it in place if possible.  Anyone have other thoughts on how to accomplish this? Thanks to everyone for responding.
Reply:Why not look at job boxes at Lowes or Home Depot and see how they are made.  Best regards Bob
Reply:Good idea, thanks Bob.
Reply:I've picked up the regular steel latches at Lowes or Depot in the past. They just get installed with rivets or screws. You can also buy the handle/latches that are used on the side boxes of utility trucks. I want to say Tractor Supply stocks them, and you can get them from Northern Tool online. Again most are just put on with pop rivets. These are a lot nicer than the regular steel latches, but are a lot more work to install..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Job boxes usually use a hook on the cover. Built inside the box bottom is a little box sized to capture the shackle of a padlock. when you close the lid the hooks pass under the body of the lock. Snap it closed the lock body prevents the hook from being withdrawn. I think this design might be more complex than you want. A simple hasp might meet your needs. If it is made in aluminum I am not aware. Have you considered a lid that sits over your box like a shoe box. Drill through four layers on each corner. and slip in a padlock. An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.
Reply:Thanks for the thoughts guys.  I can't find any aluminum latches so I bought from Bass Pro Shop last weekend a chrome plated Brass latch that can be locked.  I'm modifying my new alum. box to handle it.  I like the idea of riveting as that would be much harder to modify instead of screws/nuts.  If a thief really wants to break into one of these tool boxes, I'm sure they'll find a way.  I just don't want to make it too easy for them.
