So at some point in time I will be performing an AWS D1.8 weld test. I have been practicing with NR 232 wire but have not had much luck. The only spec I have is a picture of the test plate with dimensions so I have been welding on 1" plate with a single 30* beveled edge and a 3/8" open root. I preheat up to about 200* then make my first uphill weld. My machine is set at 20-21 volts and my wire feeder is 130-150 range. The root pass and cover passes look like crap. Also, .072 dia. Wire. With that said, is there another wire I can use that is a little more user friendly?  Does anybody know if my voltage / wire speed is within range? I have ordered the AWS book but I wouldn't expect to see it for at least a week. And as usual I am anxious to get to it. Any pointers someone would have would be greatly appreciated.
Reply:constant wire stickout is crucial, don'tt try and weld with the wire pointing up you actually have to point it down towrds the puddle during uphill progression.   Id ditch the preheat. The slag shelf is the most important thing with the 232 up.   If it starts to form a V your screwed you want to keep the slag shelf forming as flat across the puddle as possible.  Your bevel is a little light.  I usually set the saw to 22.5 deg to cut a 45 deg when the two pieces are mated together.    also 5/16" root opening.I find coresheild 8 and NR-233 run a little easyier.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:Hey Mate, please watch this whole video from Lincoln.Lots of good arc shots.Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Trump/Carson 2016-2024

Reply:Attached is the only info I have for the test plates. You can read some of the notes in the pictures.

Reply:you're much better off running stringers than trying to weave.  The slag freezes so fast that its insanely easy to get slag inclusions.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:I'm sure glad I got out of welding before the Northridge earthquake. Me and NR-232 don't see eye to eye. This is about as good as I can do with it. Reply:Well today I was burning 232, 233, and core shield 8. it is getting better but still need lots of practice. trying to fill a 3/8" root opening with no backing is starting to get easier. my filler passes tend to get choppy also. oh well... all in time I suppose.
Reply:it takes an abolute surgens hand to get a glass smooth NR-232 V-up pass.     Burnt glove,  you're trying to run a t-8 wire with no backing and a 3/8" root opening?  im shocked you can even  get a root laid in there enough to start cover passes.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.

Reply:yea thats the regular D1.8 rathole test.   I think your making your job WAY harder without backing but thats my honest opinionVantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.

Reply:when running a single pass that wide you have to be ULTRA careful of slag inclusions as the slag freezes so fast its to easy to roll some into the bead and gloss right over it .Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:Just out of curiosity burnt glove, why are you welding in the vertical position? The D1.8 test should be given in the flat position with the back welding done in the overhead position. Running a vertical open root with 232 is easier than a flat open root.
