When fabricating what tolerances do you work to? what are some tips to be as accurate as possible and have good fit-up? Just interested as to how everyone keeps everything accurate.
Reply:In my line of work the job specification normally said 2 to 3-inches. When fabricating, generally 1/32” to 1/16”. Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:"5 nines". Ha!  Depends bro on what you're fabricating/building.  As accurate as you envision your design needs to achieve for success."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:Not every day is as good as this one was, but I try to keep alignment under 0.040". With good fit up and a good weld/braze sequence, I can usually hit my marks without any cold setting.IMG_1748 by Zanconato Custom Cycles, on FlickrIMG_1749 by Zanconato Custom Cycles, on FlickrIMG_1750 by Zanconato Custom Cycles, on FlickrIMG_1751 by Zanconato Custom Cycles, on FlickrIMG_1752 by Zanconato Custom Cycles, on FlickrIMG_1754 by Zanconato Custom Cycles, on FlickrMike ZanconatoZanconato Custom Cycles @mzank on Instagram
Reply:Usually tight as possible. Squares. File. Fine tip marker and paying attention on wheather to cut on the line or off the line. You can always cut a hair over and grind down a little. Most important experience and learning from mistakes

Reply:im canadain so i work to mm ive been ask by new hires what the tolerence is for cutting and i say of it says 478mm cut it to 478mm. If you start of with all nice and tight cuts and tolerence you will finish up goodHigh Octane Welding
Reply:For cutting I go for right on the money, I'd say no more than 1/64", when welding I try to shoot for square within 1/32" measured corner to corner. The biggest thing to remember is to not use up all your tolerance in the first ten minutes of a job.

Reply:Plus or minus 1 tenth of one thousandth of a inch....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:everyone is all over the place on the tolerance used. from a few thousands to a couple inches. It all depends on what you are building. I agree, there are some things that I will eyeball, because thats all that is needed. When you build stuff pay attention to your measurements etc. when they go out, look and see what caused it. file that in your brain, so the next job maybe you can plan ahead and roll with it.- Christian M.C3 Welding & Fabrication - CNC Plasma Cutting-Mobile Welding-Custom welding and fabwww.c3welding.com

Reply:Self imposed "tolerances" are the bane of my existence.OCD has its usefulness but many times high precision isn't one of them...it can drive you batty.A nice sliding fit prior to welding has a bad habit of disappearing and I often don't have the skill set to account for it entirely.  Sometimes hours of extra work.At one time I had ambitions of building bicycles (nice work zank!) sort of glad I couldn't follow up.Generally, I start as accurately as I can since I know at some point it will be less than perfect...as was stated, don't use all leeway up in the first corner.Last edited by RussZHC; 02-16-2015 at 08:02 PM.
Reply:1/16 in practice..and I don't like seeing that.  Even if the dimension doesn't really matter, I always imagine someone throwing a tape on the item, and seeing what they need to see.  Accuracy.  .0001 as Zap said...well, now I can work on that on the machine work end of things......just took possession of a .0005 indicator.  Zap sold me my first set of mics a couple years back!-AaronJet 17.5" Drill Press1942 South Bend 16x84 Lathe1980s Miller 320A / BP --- 2013 Power Mig 2562012 Jet 7x12 Horizontal BandsawVictor O/A Setup

Reply:Close enough, kinda sorta, right on the money-ish and that'll do usually get it done around here.I'm not a professional, just an expert garage hack.If it's not within such tolerances, a big hammer usually can fix it, unless of course it's an electrical problem....Expert Garage Hack....https://www.facebook.com/steven.webber.948
Reply:I like to hold the measuring tape 1' over what I'm measuring.
