Post up where you purchase your raw materials (sheets, tubing and bar stock) from and how much it costs per foot, pound or however it's priced. I'd like to see if there is any variance from state to state or country to country. MSN does this with gas prices so I'm curious how it's similar, if at all, with steel prices.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Recently purchased in North East Ohio1/2" thick new steel plate, $.63/lbAt my job, I'm currently quoting aluminum extrusion at $2.56/lb.There are no small projects
Reply:I bought a drop piece of 3/8 thick steel slightly under 3X4 ( it was 34.5 by 49 inches?) and it cost me 93 dollars.  The place I buy from is aptly named Discount steel which is the cheapest around here (Minneapolis).  They would have charged a bit more for a shear cut ($30.) so....
Reply:Just purchased a piece of 3/8 inch steel plate 2x4 feet for $7.50 per square foot, that is $60 for the math imaired like me.  That was in Emory TX.  1 1/2 inch square tube was $1.15 per foot in Sulphur Springs TX.
Reply:I'd have to check some invoices, but it's been hovering around  $0.70 a pound lately.
Reply:I just placed an order for some steel From Alro steel.Im in Orlando Fl.             3"x1-3/8" c channle Was $31.89 For a 20ft Length             2"x2"x1/8"  angle  was 25.89 For a 20ft Length             96"x10"x1/4" Flat c roll steel for $135.93"Molten Metal Fusion Technician"
Reply:I just bought 178 pounds of 1/8" steel angle (1-1/4" and 1-1/2") for 48 cents a pound at Norton Metals in Fort Worth, Texas.  cricman
Reply:Seems like the price Larry got on 1 1/2" square was pretty decent. The "cricman" got a good price at $.48/lb. I recall paying ~$60 for a 36x48 sheet of 1/8th the other week.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:I just checked on a 4x8 Sheet of 12 gauge at my local mackine/weld shop to build a strap/chain box for a buddies car trailor. That guy wanted 189.00! Ofcourse he also charged me a buck a piece for 4 3/32 70 tig wire, so I sould'nt be suprised. I'm in north western IL.

Reply:I just paid $7.54 PER ft. for 1.75x.120 tube, 4130.X60FT.!!!! Hope this stuff does the job, 'cause 2" is unbelievably $$$$$$.455 is brutal for 60 ft. But I need 304 in 1.25x.188.... the best quote was 15.60 PER FT. Any better ideas?? This was from Tube Supplies in So. Cal. I'd like to see any kind of drop on that price, if possible. Without buying 400 ft. of it....Last edited by Rojodiablo; 06-08-2006 at 02:19 AM.

Reply:i work for a company called namasco. we are a steel service center. we process coils and make plate and sheet. on the head and tail of a coil, we crop the ends to get to the good material. we let people come in and dig through the scrap dumpster and haul what they want. if they want a pallet we charge them like 10cents a pound to put it on a pallet and throw it on a truck. good thing for me is i haul prime material home all the time.i do go to the local salvage yard for structural. our sister plants in ga and nc deal in it, i can get it at costs, but then i gotta pay shipping. i do take days off if im making a big order and trailer up and back. the salvage yard has really good deals, i get structural for about .28. they have off sizes and stuff but i made friends with the girl who works there and every time i go i take her a mountain dew. so now she will call when she has a really good deal.also, if you can afford to get a whole length, get it. service centers charge to cut the steel to length for you. that price would usually pay for the extra footage. look for a steel plant in your area, Nucor, International Steel corp and find the small service centers around it. they have no shipping and they will sell to you, call and ask for in house sales.
Reply:(by the way..should'nt this thread be under general welding questions...rather than projects and pictures??) ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.Back when I first posted this, I think it was my initial thought that most of us comsume mass quantities of material when making our projects, so I placed it here. Reply:easternmetal.com currently sells me aluminum at about $2.10/lb for any extrusion that is 20' feet longfor the shorter 12' lenghts the price goes up to about $$2.93/lbif you buy more than 1000 lbs of anything they give you about a 5% discount.one thing I like about aluminum vs steel pricing is that it is a lot more consistent and you don't have to buy a ton of it to get a "good" deal.
