ok so i was looking for a bottle for my thermal arc 181i, so i posted a ad on kijiji and had a guy email me saying he had a bottle, i thought great. go pick up the bottle he wanted 50 bucks i said sounds good. get it home and was looking at getting it filled but the closest one to me is a hour away and my neighbor thinks its not a consumer bottle....its air liquide bottle the height including the cap is 48 inches and the diameter is 7 inches....ive seen a few stamps on the tank saying 73,87,95,06 my assumption is the bottle was made in 73 and was recertified each time. i looked on air liquide's site but do not see any bottle's matching that size so im not sure what it is. can anyone tell me what size it is considered? and if its a consumer bottle or did someone sell me something illegally.Last edited by dpasch; 03-03-2013 at 10:06 AM.Century 88amp 110v migCentury 100, 110migPowcon200smThermal Arc 140 migThermal Arc Fabricator 211i
Reply:This may help for size.  Check to be sure it's 7" and not 6.5"From the website: http://www.tricowelding.com/cylinder_sizing.htmlAs far as refill, just call the company and others in your area to find out who will fill it.Dave J. Reply:Picts would help.48" tall tells me it's roughly an 80-125 cf cylinder. ( I'd have to measure mine of dig up the sticky that shows cylinder sizes to check.) Most places that would mean it is a "owner" size cylinder and most places will swap it or fill it no problem. However some here have reported they can only buy small say 80 cf cylinders or less at their LWS. Larger cylinders are "rentals". What your suppliers will or will not accept will depend on them.Note that many times owner size cylinders, even if the supplier puts their name on the collar are exchangeable at other places. I could take any of my smaller cylinders in to any of the local suppliers and exchange them no matter who's collar or tag is on the cylinder. I do know of some real d1cks at some locations who might give me a hassle, but then they'd give me a hard time anyways, that's just how they are. A lot of it is an intimidation tactic to try to push you into something you don't need. I've had a few guys in the past who were d1cks who wanted to give me a hard time about my rental cylinders as well , even though I have an account and everything is documented in their system. I don't deal with that location regularly, so they think they can pull a fast one on me. Usually I just walk out and go deal with someone else..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:i double checked the height and diameter and it is 4ft to the top of the cap and 7 inches diameter, i had talked to a praxair seller and he said they arent allowed to accept any other brand tank. Reply:My local Home Depot exchanges all kinds of cylinders.  Must have some kind of agreement with big companies I'd guess...However, I still use my local welding store anyway - good relationships are important.I've taken a chance on used cylinders and my local store has hooked me upDave J.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:If it's an A.L cylinder, A.L will take it, unless it's phuk'd up. A.L only accepts there own cylinders. All mine are A.L. Risky buying cylinders used unless you take them to the shop your getting it filled at and have the ok it. Good luck.PS. Dunno about A.L. where you are, but out here, the morons at the corporate level, allowed most of there 40's expire and not get replacements. They've phuk'd their customers and they can't get gas. It's been a month now that they've been out. Way to force your customers into the welcoming arm of BOC(or whom ever owns them this year....) and Praxair. I'm hoping to ride it out as my guy at the local shop, Steve is great and really goes the distance for me. Thinking of writing them an email. Idiots. Rant over....  200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
Reply:well i went to the "local" Air Liquide dealer and brought the tank in, they asked if i had a contract i said no and they told me i dont own that tank and i would have to give it back to them....i told the guy to go pound sand and put it back in the car. so im not quite sure what to do...seems its useless to me right nowCentury 88amp 110v migCentury 100, 110migPowcon200smThermal Arc 140 migThermal Arc Fabricator 211i
Reply:If you go to that town occasionally, you could open an account and lease a tank.  Then you always have a spare as you rotate the two tanks.Dave J.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.

Reply:What happened at AL didnt surprise me. That's basically the way its been explained to me.You need to have a lease in order to get the exchange. Once you have a lease you can swap the two bottles. Buddy sort of scammed you when you bought that tank.If you do get it swapped without a lease, let me know! I have the same bottle in the barn but I have no lease for it. I do own my own Size 9 bottle of blueshield 8 but I'd love to run the larger size 22 instead. It works out cheaper.I have an account and used to lease bottles, but gave that up years ago when I bought mine. Don't they look up your lease status on the computer when you return a lease size bottle?I sort of have a line on some large oxy-ace bottles, but im not going to buy them if I have to go back on a lease.Last edited by scooby074; 03-06-2013 at 01:20 AM.

Reply:I dont deal with Prax, but I think they are the same as AL regarding leases on this size bottle. If you know a guy who will pull some strings at Prax.. Good for you, I wish I was in the same position!!\ I know the guys at AL here pretty well...they know me by name, but im still not sure about taking my big bottle in for exchange. I dont want it "to go bad" and get into some huge fight with the place I do business. I might just casually mention it next time im in and see what they say before I just show up with it.I know that when it comes to the small, size 9's both prax and Al will let you own them. They also will take an AL #9  bottle at prax and vise versa. Ive seen Prax bottles at AL.Its funny how everything changes when you get larger than a size 9 though

Reply:Originally Posted by bert the welderBring it in the car with you. They can't take it from you. AL does only sell up to a certain size to the punters, bigger you have to lease. The only Praxx bottles I've see at AL are expired ones that they got left with from new customers switching over to them or bottles people got screwed buying on the web. If they know your name, it's a good sign. Take to them, they might try to help you out if they can. Otherwise, you could make it into a garden bell.  Or.... drop it off at my local AL and I'll end up with it and make it into a garden bell. Yeah, that's a good LWS relationship baby!
Reply:It's a little late in the game but I "think" I've solved the problem in my parts.  Do not take the bottle to the suppliers main location, they will definitely try to get the bottle from you and sign you up for a lease.  Take it to a listed depot such as a gas station and do the swap there.  I just called one and they said I had to bring in their "brand" of bottle and there were two options:  a) bill it to an account with the head office, b) cash and carry for bottle contents.  This seems like a win win solution to me.  The distributor gets their "missing" bottle back and they get a sale they wouldn't normally have gotten.  The buyer gets to unload an unwanted tank and have a steady supply of gas without the annual lease.Cheers, Steve
