What motion do you make doing 6010 uphill and what motion do you make going down hill with itMiller Dialarc 250Miller Bobcat 225Hobart Oxy/FuelCouple of Dewalt and Milwaukee GrindersJET Bandsaw and Drill Press
Reply:Haven't done downhill with it but going uphill i do very tiny circlesJust good enough aint good enoughIf your gonna be a bad welder you better be a darn good grinder
Reply:Going down is just a whip and pause.
Reply:little circles  downhill uphill usually grind

Reply:Yes. Done right, either would be the same. The key to any of this is to be able to read and manipulate the puddle. If doing bevel buts, you watch the root keyhole and manipulate the rod as needed to maintain control of the puddle. The keyhole tells you you've broken down the edges on both sides of the joint.  The puddle then fills in this opening. If you can't read and manipulate the puddle, you'll either end up not breaking down the edges, or you'll loose control and blow a big hole in the root. Many times each person has their own way that they prefer to do this with, circles, whip and pause, V motion, just jamming the rod in and running stringers... The end result if done right is the same..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:DSW again answered it well. Normally uphill just a side to side movement burning into the edges moving up , kinda like a ''C '' on its side. Downhill, just crank up the heat and drag it down the joint,

Reply:well, 6010 isn't the first rod that come to my mind for things like that, but I'd do whatever motion i needed to to get the size weld needed, or tie some stringers by whip pause.  I wouldnt do circles on something like that.    You asked whats stronger earlier.  i think 6011 is lil stronger than 6010.   someone mentioned 7018 earlier
Reply:Usually whipping with 6010 in any position but a lot of downhill, especially on pipe,  is done at high heat going straight down dragging the rod on the pipe and in the case of a root pass actually pushing the rod into the pipe.

Reply:cause i've done enough half *** repairs on stuff, or temporary fixes, and seen the results w/ both rods to where i'm confident in what i said.   also noticeable in tacking.    There must be something about the 6010 cooling to quick, or the 6011 just being more ductile, or something like that.   no doubt in my mind.
Reply:What machine are you using? It may be that 6011 runs smoother on your machine allowing you to get a better weld but it's not stronger. 6010 has more penetration. 6011 was invented to be a 6010 type rod that would burn on AC. XX10 also comes in 7010, 8010 and 9010. XX11 is only available in 60,000 psi tensile.
Reply:alright man, you win.   i now believe what you say, and what i've seen isn't true.

I'd be curious to compare a few more rods to each other..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:First time I ever heard of 6011 being more ductile than 6010 was working in a Standard Oil refinery in the early 1970s. There were about 250 pipe welders on that project. I was BSing with one of the pipe welders in his welding shack, I noticed he was tacking with 6011, but making all his welds with 6010. I asked him why. He felt 6011 was more ductile than the red 6010. He said he like to tack with 6011 because he could bang the small fittings into alignment without the tacks breaking.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
