How good are Home Depot Extended warranty plans?

I didnt' realize this, but Home depost is a reseller of a lot of different welders, AHP, Longevity,Everlast, Lotos, other chineese stuff, and Lincoln welders.http://www.homedepot.com/b/Tools-Har...s/N-5yc1vZc8lsFor welders between $1000 and $2000 you can get a 3 year warranty extension for $280.It starts when the manufacturer's warranty ends.Normally I think extended warranties are for chumps, but given the unproven track records of these newer digital chinese welders $280 does not seem that bad. It seems like the chineese manufacturer's have new replacment models every 2 years or so and parts might be hard to come by 4 years down the road, which means you would get a brand new welder to replace a broken in warranty one? what do you think?

Reply:Why by junk in the first place and get aggravated fixing something that shouldnt break? I bought over 20 years ago a lincoln weldpak 100 from homedepot and it still is going strong with no issues....for all the money I NEVER buy extended warranties ( cars, appliances etc.) I so far ahead I can replace or fix almost anything and still have saved money ....print out or put a link to the extended warranty so we can read the details.....Of all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...

Reply:It's just an exercise in probability.  Businesses like HD or Best Buy make a profit on extended warranties or they wouldn't sell them.   The price is figured so they take in more than they pay out so the odds are against you.  Then on top of that if you factor in the hassle of collecting on it they are not attractive to me and I always decline them.   The only items I don't self insure are the truly big things like houses and new trucks.

Reply:just to check them out I called the phone number on the contract, the computer gives you a choice between direct tv or other issues, choose other and it hangs up on youchoose direct tv and they say sorry they have to look up that phone numberthen they tell you to call home depot. not exactly reassuring. maybe that is just how they work using home depot as their puppet.
Reply:Lincoln offers a 3 yr warranty.  I have ways received great customer service through them.  The other brands listed make me cringe as much as being asked to purchase an extended warranty.
Reply:good for you, I have a lincoln and their service provider, air gas, sucks. took a PT275 to them a while ago , they called me up and said the welder was fixed.I went to pick it up and they told me a wire had shorted out against a panel. showed me the bare wire , the fixed it by pushign the wire back so it would not touch the panel.!!!! seriously that was their solution, I saw  the paper work and the charged lincoln about $400 for pushgin back the wire. after I bitched, they used electrical tape to "repair" /cover it.never had an issue wtih the longevity 160sx.

Reply:To clarify....the warranty and service provided is effective day 1 and extends the manufacture's warranty by 3 year or up to a total of 5 years whichever is shortest.  Anything happens you deal with home depot and not the manufacturer directly. Home depot will handle all of the logistics /costs.....

Reply:Number of Milwaukee power tools.....and most recently what I described earlier was for a an AHP tig welder, they even honored 20% harbor freight coupon......use home depot chat function on their site and save the transcript....
