When I began welding full time two years ago, it was at a pressure vessel shop that expressly forbade whipping, weaving or otherwise welding a non-continuous bead when using dual-shield.  Now I work at a different pressure vessel shop and it's pretty much a free for all: I see guys whip, weave, figure-8, lower case "e's", write their name in cursive, etc with their dual-shield.  I was just wondering how everyone else does it and what the advantages of both are. The former shop cited contamination and leakage under pressure for their continuous-bead-only stance; my current shop says they've never had problems with it.
Reply:Your gonna see a lot of slag inclusions. I worked with a guy who ran dual shield like it was hard wire and every time I ground off one of his pos welds I saw pin holes. Run it like a 7018, don't run over your slag. Are they x-ray testing the welds?Last edited by jamesyarbrough; 09-07-2013 at 08:59 AM.
Reply:Yeah, all vessels are 100% x-ray.  I'm on the skid crew so we just have visual inspections, but I see guys welding out vessels like I had mentioned.  Makes sense that one wouldn't want to weld on slag like that.
Reply:Stringers, minimal manipulation, when the machine is dialed in it sprays in nice and there is no need to weave. You might need a slight weave if you have a bad fit up, but be sure to remove all slag, and grind out any porosity and worm tracks.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:now going vertical up with dualshield same as say runnin a 7018? drop volts/wirespeed and work it going up?R.T. Welding LLCOn Site ServiceColumbus, NJ
Reply:Vert up when it is set right is like using a caulking gun, it sprays in nice and pretty much welds it self. I am of course talking about an E71T-1 wire such as Excel Arc or Ultracore.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:thanks tozzi. so basically drag it up. i just picked up .045 ultracore 71a85 for a couple jobs so gotta play with it someR.T. Welding LLCOn Site ServiceColumbus, NJ
Reply:Push it up, when it is set right it will hiss, and there will be no ball on the end of the wire, 22-24 volts 190-240 wire speed. That is a big ball park, but it all depends on your machine, distance to the feeder, wire brand, gas type, etc.....Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:definetely. runnin ln25 off my TB with c25 or stargon mixR.T. Welding LLCOn Site ServiceColumbus, NJ
