I've been wanting to learn how to tig so i've been researching awhile for a good beginner tig machine. It seems like the topic always veers towards noobie askin if diversion 160 or 185 would be a good fit and it seems the experts usually recommend getting a syncrowave  or used dynasty since it's a machine u can grow into and diversion is way over priced for what it is.  I found a brand new dynasty 200 dx 907099011 for $2500 so I took a plunge and swooped it up. The seller is my good friend and he swore to me that i was getting a good deal.  Is this a good choice for noob to get into tig or will all the extra options make it more difficult to learn?  Which torch and foot pedal do you recommend?

Reply:That is a great machine.First thing is to download the owner's manual from the Miller site. Then read all of the Dynasty setup posts stickied at the top of the Welding Discussion forum. Find your local Miller Distributer and get an account for gasses and then ask them to factory reset to default parameters. Also have then check the serial # to see if it is stolen or still in warranty.I can tell you if it had Blue Lightning arc start. That is important if you are going to spend $2500.Why does it not come with peripherals? Reply:because he bought the machine only package since he already had all the other parts to go with it.  It says it has blue lighting on the manual.  It's never been used and was in unopened box when i got it from him.  It looks like this, I have no idea if it's the older model or new.
Reply:does the torch size get bigger as the rated amp output gets higher?  do you guys have a specific torch(brand/size) and foot pedal that u would recommend?  thanks for all the input everyone, very much appreciated.
Reply:SSC makes some nice pedals that are less expensive than the Miller ones. Quite a few guys here have them and like them. If I hadn't found a deal on a MIller one cheap for My MAxstar, that's the way I'd have gone.http://www.ssccontrols.com/homepage-...ngcontrols.htmTorches, CK makes a really nice torch. They are less expensive and have a higher duty cycle than similar Weldcraft torches Miller sells. You need to decide how many amps you need, and buy accordingly. A 9, 17 and 26 torch are all air cooled torches. Each has a different amp rating. As the amperage goes up however, the torches get bigger and bulkier. A 9 series is a nice small compact torch, but the amp/duty cycle is on the low side. The 17 is the "stock" size Miller sells in the kits. It's a nice compromise between size and amp/duty cycle. It is much bigger than a 9, and uses different parts. The CK torch this size is rated at 150 amps 100% duty cycle vs the 60% duty cycle on the Weldcraft torches. It probably will do everything you need unless you are pushing that machine to the max on alum. They do also have a 200 amp rated torch also.http://www.arc-zone.com/index.php?ma..._907_1399_1025.No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I've owned a dynasty 200dx for several years but I was a well rounded welder to begin with. I do agree that inverters are easier to weld with from a strictly welding stand point but with a dynasty the advanced settings can hurt you more than help if you get way off track.  My suggestion is to get someone experienced to help you set it up and get your settings on a happy medium and do not mess with the settings as your difficulties will be YOU not the machine. I recommend the soft square wave and 100 hertz on the frequency for aluminum. All the bells and whistles on a dynasty are mostly for aluminum but make no mistake it shines on any medium. Good luck and don't be afraid to ask questions.

Reply:Machines with more bells and whistles can be problematic for both beginners and experienced welders .Beginners get over whelmed by the multitude of options to terms/ functions they don't even know because well, they just don't know what they mean or do.Experienced dudes can get frustrated because although they know all of the functions , controlling/adjusting those functions is a new process. Often times its harder for old dogs to learn new ways.Anyhoo- download the manual, if you don't have one, and * glance through it to learn the basics of connecting everything and towards the back they have set up charts for mild steel, SS and aluminum. USE those charts to get you started. Once you get comfortable then start using the advanced functions.* I say glance because there are definitely sections where you just need to pass through until you understand more of the basic welding process, you can always go back to those sections.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:So it is still in the box. Does your friend have the reciepts? Perhaps you can register it in your name and take advantage of any warranty left. And like previously stated, leave the parameters alone for now as they are pretty close for most work.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:Thanks a bunch, this is the first forum i've come across that actually wants to help and gives sound advise for questions asked even if they've been brought up many times before instead of bashing the noob with the "use the search button".   Sole reason why i don't go on any sportsbike forums anymore(GSXR.com is the worst IMO).  -Should I go with the smaller torch first and get the fundamentals down first before moving on to a bigger torch or vice versa?  -Do all torches regardless of brand, have same amp rating across the board for specific numbered torches?(eg.9-125amp,17-150amp,26-200amp)-What's the difference between torch w/valve and w/o?-Is the flex head better than rigid?
Reply:If you'd like there are plenty of guys here who will be more than happy to abuse and flame you if you'd prefer... Would you like a list of names?  Originally Posted by Viciou5Vend3tta-Should I go with the smaller torch first and get the fundamentals down first before moving on to a bigger torch or vice versa?
Reply:Congrats on the new welder. As far as price, I haven't watched Ebay in a while but I don't think Dynasties DX EVER go for less.  Ebay is good source for what I consider the high end price.Note, for Dynastys about 5 years ago they made a major change in that they added a feature called "blue lightning" which gave a much better high frequency start.  My Dynasty doesn't have it and at least for aluminum doesn't seem to be needed at all.  However, it makes a difference in value of the machine should you try to sell it. As for torch.   I have the 17 on my Maxstar and it is a bit bulky.  Because I'm mostly on 110V on that machine it is probably too big for what I'm doing.   The water cooled WP20 is my favorite TIG torch  - but that requires a water cooler or water setup.Once you have your welder, lots of accessories available on Ebay and Craigslist.  Accessories go for much more reasonable prices than Dynastys.Con Fuse!Miller Dynasty 350Millermatic 350P-Spoolmatic 30AMiller Multimatic 200Hypertherm PowerMax 1000G3Miller Maxstar 200DX
Reply:As pointed out above, if you can hobble together a water cooled 20 series torch, you will not be disappointed.  You already have arguably the worlds best Tig machine in its class, so take advantage of it.The main reason I love my 20 series torch is the very small size and maneuverability.   I have the CK230 flexhead I bought used with a bunch of extras on eBay for $125.  A 17 series torch feels like you're holding a baseball bat compared to it.  An air cooled 9 is supposed to feel the same, but the duty cycle is just so low.  I used to go though collets frequently with the 17, the head would warp and twist them.  The collets in the 17 look barely used after hours of welding.  If you get a chance and have the opportunity, see if you can try one out.  Post up your location in the user CP.  many here would love to help.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:@ Viciou5Vend3ttaYou'll dig welding with the Dynasty 200DX.  Recommend a CK Worldwide 230A H2O-cooled 'Flex-Loc' Torch w/ 25' SuperFlex cables. The 3-piece SF cables with protectors are ultra-flexible. Couple the TIG Torch to an SSC Pedal are you'll be set. Once you enter the water , you'll jettison the air-cooled approach. You can occasionally find solid, pre-owned, Miller/Bernard Coolers from WW members.  Would def target a CoolMate 3, over a CM4.The arc characteristics on the Dynasty are outstanding.  Start basic with 3/32 La or Th Tungsten and let the pulse features ride until you master technique on 1/8" mild steel, SS, and Al pieces in all positions. Reply:so using the pulsing option helps you weld a bit easier?  what is a good base setting for a beginner to just practice running beads? if u guys can recommend any, it will be much appreciated. Just ordered some gas lens and SSC foot pedal after reading recommendations from yall.  My buddy gave me a CK9 flex torch so i'll probably look into getting the water cooled set up once I get some practice.  Is the cable cover a necessity or do u not care for them?
Reply:One pulse per second should be about right until you get the eye, hand,  and foot coordination down some. Using pulse other than for puddle agitation, or controlling heat input can be a viable crutch unit your comfortable.Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkLate to bed, and early to rise.
