I am welding up a smoker for a friend. I have some chrome plated steel shelving that would work great as grates..............these OK to use???
Reply:I wouldn't use it, at some point the plating will come of and end up on the food. Mild steel, cast iron, or stainless steel are all good choices for smoker racks. Ken
Reply:What he says, I was always told buy old timers, Grates from an oven not from a fridge as they will "poison" the food. Always heeded their advice!
Reply:Metal and cast iron can be seasoned. Stainless is the best but there are good grades of stainless steel and not so good that will rust. I like the ceramic coated grates that came with my smoker. You can purchase most of these ready for use in various sizes.
Reply:this is weird because I am currently building a smoker out of some propane tanks. 5 gallons is what I am using. I am also in a pickle trying to find shelving for the interior being it is a custom size, im thinking about using expanded carbon steel sheets.
Reply:expanded metal works great for grates. I wouldn't use the chrome plated grates. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger

Reply:Expanded metal works fine, and is generally the go to material for shelving of most pitmakers, though some get fancy and come up with alternatives.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
