our shop lathe which is about 40 years old crashed the other day. when the machinist tore it down we found one of the smaller gears on the auto feed was missing a couple teeth. i cleaned as much of the grease with some solvent then vee'd it out with a cut off wheel then tacked a short length of 3/4 angle on each site to act as run off tabs. i welded it with 3/32 7018 and wrapped it in some fiberglass insulation and fire resistant drop cloths to slow cooling. heat treat isn't an option so i'm keeping my fingers crossed as to the final results. sorry for the crappy pic on the left. Reply:I say it as a question to anyone. Would it have been better to use a different rod or I was thinking a braze repair would be even better?

Reply:It would be nice to know whether it is steel or cast Iron. if its steel I would weld it with 7018. if it is cast brass would be as tough. Mac
Reply:7018? that's exactly what i'm gonna did.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla

Reply:the gear hasn't been machined yet. we just got a new machinist after about 10 years so he's kinda overwhelmed between backlog of work and his surroundings.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:A trick we used to slow cool parts is to cover with powdered lime. It keeps the air away and will slow cool heat treated parts.
Reply:I bought a South Bend with a bad gear and found a good used one on eBay. Lots if of parts listed. Dan D.
Reply:there's some movement towards completion on the lathe gear. getting there. something always seems to come up when we get a minute to work on this. Attached Imagesi.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla |
