Hey all, I'm fairly new to the welding industry. Just graduated from technical school and have started the job search process. anyway, my grandparents picked up this old forney c-3 stick welder for me a while back indending for me to have something to practice with or even use later on. it even came with a really nice old stinger, which i took apart and cleaned up. looks good as new! the welder itself is in decent enough shape, but all the cables are shot. dried out so badly they're stiff, any attempt to move them just makes them break and fall apart. I'm looking to restore this machine to working condition and as far as i can tell the internals are fine. no broken wires, no damage to the coil, all of the taps appear to be intact as well. I'm having trouble locating much on it though! the forney website doesnt appear to have a user manual for this type of welder anymore and i cant seem to find much else online. At the very least i need a power cable, a family friend had some leads that fit the machine. does anyone have information on where i may be able to pick up an original forney power cable? or even have an old machine being parted out?thanks in advance.
Reply:Have you tried calling Forney? I can tell you this much, IF any parts are still available. It will be only the jacks. Get the part number from them, go to any hardware or pluming store that sells Forney accessories. They can order them.Just checked an old Forney book I have. Don't have any info on C-3 welders. But found this note. The part number for a set of jacks and receptacles.  57960 jack  57510 receptacle.Might be the jacks you need for the weld leads.
Reply:I will look have the same welder ,go to Home Depot or Lowes for a new power cord . Make it up with wire and plug to suit, 50 amp.Tractor Supply has lead by the foot or any welding supply.
Reply:That welder probably uses a 50 amp range cord.I have a manual some where.Welding lead is sold by the foot..
Reply:Installing a new 50 amp range cord, if properly grounded, will be an improvement to the welder.I offer three choices: Good, Fast, & Cheap. You may pick two.Hobart AC/DC StikMate LXHarbor Freight AD HoodHarbor Freight Industrial Chop SawDeVilbis 20 Gallon, 5 HP Compressor
Reply:I had an old Forney Welder at one time, and when I let my Nephew have it I gave him the manual I had which was not for that Forney but a similar one. Like has been mentioned here if you will call Forney they will probably send you an owners manual right away as they did me. The manual I had was not for my particular welder but it was close enough I got a lot of good use out of it. I think they also sent me a book on stick welding that came from Forney. The old Forney Welders are pretty much bullet proof. I know someone here in town that has one and he lets it sit out doors in all kinds of weather and it still works every time he is ready to use it. I kept mine in doors, it was a pretty heavy little welder.
Reply:Input wiring from 240 is easy - whatever plug fits your outlet.  Lead wire is readily available.  However, the plug-in terminals for the welding leads should be saved if at all possible.  I have heard that some of the replacements don't fit.  Maybe there were two different sizes/tapers for those plug that go into the welder.  Other than that, you don't need a manual.  Just don't weld like crazy on a hot day  - duty cycle on old welders with no fan isn't great."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
