i am thinking about trading my hypertherm powermax 380 for a decent oxy/ace setup. what do ya'll think about that? i dont use it that much and think with the multiple uses of a torch, i might use it more often. would you think i could get a nice setup with the big bottles in a fair trade?? lets hear some input.thanks,
Reply:Personally I think you'd be loosing money on the deal. I've seen torch sets go used on CL cheap. If you are serious and want to talk, PM me. I've got a spare set of torches I'd consider parting with if you aren't that far away...No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:And also, plasma can cut aluminum and stainless steel clean! I too, have a O/P setup as well as a plasma cutter. May not use one or the other often, but they are handy to have. I went with propane because there is no problem using a rosebud and I really don't intend on welding with it. Acet. cannot be used with just any rosebud. If you can get the torch setup and the bottles and keep the hypertherm, too .....go for it! It's your decision.Rodney The blessing of the Lord makes one rich, And He adds no sorrow with it.' Reply:If you really don't use the plasma...list it on Craigslist....get $500-$600 for it....and then either buy a new portable oxy/fuel setup (Tractor Supply)...or find a used big tank setup.Personally......I couldn't get by without both plasma and oxy-fuel. I rarely cut with the oxyfuel.....but I occasionally use it for dismantling an old rusty somthing or other.....or I use it for heat for bending / straightening. My 3 plasma cutters get used daily...Powermax45 on a cnc machine, one portable Powermax30 on a weld cart with a Hobart210, and the other Powermax1000 at my welding table.Jim
Reply:I agree with Jim sell only if you have to. Eventually you might need it and it certainly works faster, cleaner, and with less heat distortion that a oxy/acy torch. But yeah I couldn't be without my PowerMax 45 and oxy/acy torch on my farm.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.& 2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
Reply:hmm... i guess you are all right. and, i would hate to have to buy it again in 5-10 years when i decide i would actually use it more. i am just wanting new toys and i am too impatient to wait til the wife says its ok. figured i could sell something to buy something and she would never really know or care. oh well...

Reply:Hi guys,I have a strange (ie novice) question about plasma torch assemblyI have a Harbor Freight 110v plasma cutter. I purchased it missing a couple parts specifically the cap, the electrodes/tips and ceramic diffuser. Now, as far as I can tell, when I assemble the parts, the electrode and the tip contact one another, in order to seat the three items. I noticed that the electrode is spring loaded but honestly, have no clue if this is a direct short that will destroy my (at least currently unsmoked) machine or is this how it's actually designed?Any advise, direct to my email would be appreciated. [email protected] or [email protected] question. Any thoughts on hooking up the cheap 80amp inverter as a TIG supply? I thought a little shaping of the wave form and maybe an upgrade on the caps etc might be the trick.I'm interested in fusing copper, presumably using Ar gas (or would CO2 do the trick?)ThanksDoug
Reply:Yes , i have the same 91814 HF Plasma Cutter......when u screw on the nozzle cap it presses the brass cone with the hole in it directly down on the spring loaded electrode......You've got it right....if you want , i'll post pictures........You need to go back and re-post your TIG conversion question ONLY in the Harbor Freight Section......people here wont help u... they are totally biased Against HF products...do the whole TIG mod "thread" in the "Harbor Freight" section , i want to follow along... thermal arc 252i - millermatic 350P - miller XMT, cp300ts, 30a 22a feeders, buttload of other millers, handfull of lincolns, couple of esabs - Hypertherm 1250 G3 |
