well i just got nice pair of hk porter bolt cutters but the right jaw has a big chip out of it . so i was wondering it could be filled with impact resistant hardfacing rod ? and where do i get some hardfacing rod i can grind on .
Reply:Those jaws are replaceable and come in different hardness's.  The proper way to cut a bolt, lock or whatever using a bolt cutter is once the jaws are tight around the piece to be cut, do not wiggle or move the handles sideways as this movement will usually chip the cutters.  Always hold the handles firmly and apply pressure straight with no side-to-side movement.  Just my experience.  Best regards Bob

Reply:The jaws are tempered and any thing you do to them will make them worse. Replace is your best bet. They are cheap.
Reply:There is hardfacing meant for building up cutting edges. But boltcutter jaws have a much tougher life than something that cuts sheet metal for example, it might work and it might not. If you like experimenting, go right ahead, if you just want a working boltcutter, go shopping.
Reply:I tried it once using stellite and tig.  After a few cuts the weld broke off of the base material.  Just replace the jaws.Dan D.Manipulator Of Metal
