Hello all. I am a semi experienced pipe/code welder with about 7 years under my belt. Welding to the boiler/pressure vessel codes. I have a great shop job with ac, and pays pretty good for what it is. But I'm 24 years old and been thinking of traveling around a bit for a couple of years until my daughter is old enough to start school. Been checking into tank repair, ships, nuclear, etc. I'm still a little green but am fairly seasoned with most welding process'. Does anyone know where a man could start?   My whole reason is to make the max amount of money possible for the next couple years, without a rig myself. Any advice would be great, and yes I am aware of the hours, hot cold, etc.I wanna jumpstart on life so to speak. And get to travel.Sorry for being long winded. Thanks!!
Reply:My old  teacher worked in Bermuda, said the pay was pretty  decent  and the biggest thing is no income tax.  Many opportunities  out there for experienced welders to go to fforeign countries  that desperately  need people  with real knowledge.
Reply:Thanks for input. I'm hoping to stick around in the states. My partner and daughter are wanting to tag along with me.
Reply:Just interested if anyone knows of any companies that hire and send guys around
Reply:You typically don't travel around and make big bucks with your butt in some one else's rig. Are you thinking that a motor home for the family is part of the deal? Also the terms "traveling" and "family" usually don't go to well together. Not trying to discourage you but life on the road is tough, and many work places aren't exactly great family lifestyle locations. It always burns my bacon when the interweb idiots try to glamorize life, and money, on the road for construction people. That's why you see so many guys crash and burn after only a couple seasons, and you hear so many asinine questions about rigging up a Toyota with a lawn mower and instantly making big bucks. I hope you and your family can figure out something that will work for all of you. Best of luck.
Reply:I'm not on the same page I guess - once kids are involved I would only travel if I had no other choice. As a parent myself, I've turned down a few higher paying opportunities, one much higher, to be home with my boys.I've also turned down higher paying overnight work so that I'm awake when they are.I figured once they are grown and on their own, then I'll travel if I get the urge.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:In general, there's no such thing as a get rich quick plan. If there was, everyone would do it. Every time a high-demand and well paying job comes around, everyone rushes to that field. Some get lucky, most get nothing. Don't get me wrong, there are definitely jobs that pay more than others, and some guys land a job that makes them a fortune. You usually see them raving about it on the internet. Keep your job if you enjoy it. Spend some quality time with your kid now. These first few years are the most important. Every accomplishment I've ever made in my career is nothing compared to the moments I get to spend with my son (5 months old now).John 3:16(2) Miller Pheonix 456(2) Millermertic 252Dynasty 210DXHobart 210MVPDoringer D350 SA Cold SawScotchman 350LT Cold SawWebb 10x50 MillWebb 15x40 LatheGeka Bendicrop Ironworker
Reply:I appreciate all the input. And to be honest, I'm on the same page. Lol, its my partner who is more interested in traveling. I love where I am. I know a couple of guys that travel around repairing tanks, and have the past few years.. Make around 30per hr. @ 72hrs, 6-12s. Plus 110 per diem per working day.. Running someone else's rigs. With little benefits also. I've since contacted a few companies, but things are kinda slow now with ⛽ price plummeted. Not that I'm 100% sure tank repair is what I was wanting anyway. And my idea was to just purchase a fifth wheel camper trailer and truck to pull. I rent a home, and own another  outright elsewhere I have locked up. (No jobs in that area)So in other words no bills if I was traveling. Renting is expensive where I am.. So in reality as long as me and my partner didn't choke each other in the camper. It would be beneficial in theory.Hopefully that makes more sense of what I'm trying to do. Overall, I'd like to stockpile $$ maybe buy a chunk of land, and return in a few years. If anyone knows of any companies anyway please share. I'm still considering it. Just popping resumes to companies, if I get a hit. I'll check it out, if I don't like, I'll sit in my ac shop and chill.☺Thanks again guys!Last edited by Goodolboy09; 03-22-2015 at 04:40 PM.
Reply:Tons of Singlehand jobs in NoDak .......Most going for $30.00 plus per/hr. and $50-$75 per deim .......Hell a guy over on rigwelder.com posted a job his son is going to at a compressor station......$55/hr. $70 per deim and a room...... Hell, I run my rig on contract drill rig rebuilding at $55.00/hr. providing everything.... Lot of hours in 2-4 weeks $$$$$$$
Reply:Thanks. Yeah I hear a lot of $ up that way. If I could find a company that sends people around, hell I'd do that. Even if it were traveling around. My biggest concern would be staying busy. May be too much to ask these days. The tank rebuilders been rolling for over three years though... I'm not seeking turn arounds so to speak.. But I guess it wouldn't matter in the end what it was.Do you have a clue what companies to contact? TksLast edited by Goodolboy09; 03-22-2015 at 06:49 PM.
Reply:And I am aware get rich quick schemes will get a lot of guys in trouble trying to achieve, although I will say I knew one guy that made 300k a year. Out of a rig that anyone with about 10k could of thrown together. Old Chevy gas dually and old redface.. Spent hardly any of it. And ended up with 1.6mil after about seven years and retired bought and owned everything he had. Another was my instructor. He was a excellent welder. Had about 10 different 50k+ cars. My point is it is possible to do very very well. Just not many may make it to that point. Mind you these men worked through Christmas' and about every other holiday. This isn't what I want, but just stating with a plan, understanding family, and right goals and will. You can make it happen.Last edited by Goodolboy09; 03-22-2015 at 07:47 PM.
