I was given a piece of history today. its called a pole vice.its about 3.5 feet tall the top half is the vice the bottom is a solid inch and a half thick bar.ive been told that they were drove into the ground and used as a portable vice alongside the railroad during construction.the jaws on the vice open to ten inches.the pole end ive been told was used as a bar for jacks to lift on the rail cars and other big equipment during constuction.this thing is severe duty.ill bet it weighs close to 100lbs. im not sure its wrought iron,or maybee a manganese steel?. its in perfect working order and im planning on mounting it to a table i made.i need to know what it is if im gonna zap it. i have some 8018c3 rod, so im going to put a small bead down just to see.lincoln weld pak 100 hdlincoln ranger 225gxt ac/dcoxy/acetylenepuroxcw202 victor fc100harris model 85harrismodel 16oxweld w24roxweld w17

Reply:I would say it is just iron. A spark test with a grinder would do the trick. Dont know if it is worth much being it is in good shape as an antique. If so might not want to weld on it. Back then they made stuff out of steel. I think only the cheap newer ones were cast iron.  Tie it on there with 6010 or 6011 then put a good pas of 7018. You will have a better vice than me. My neighbor has one he has used all his life. Harold
Reply:i also have a bunch of plates that were used to hold the rails to the wooden planks om the ground.there stamped“b.s.c(bethlahem steel corporation)1929” and the number 130 stamped on bottom.i think i found it in my book(procedures in arc welding). rqc130. i think i have 6or7 and lots of spikeslincoln weld pak 100 hdlincoln ranger 225gxt ac/dcoxy/acetylenepuroxcw202 victor fc100harris model 85harrismodel 16oxweld w24roxweld w17

Reply:Thats what I was thinking Sandy. I've got one I picked up and need to do a full cleaning on. Probably need to do SWells electrolisis on it to cut most of the old rust. My friend has 2 of different sizes he got somewhere. I'd like to get the one from him that's a different size than mine..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
