What would be consider a maximum gap in a bad fit up{the chill ring to the pipe]?Welding in 2G, 1/4 inch gap, backing plate{chill ring, 3/8" thick x 6" wide] on 1" wall, 72 inch diameter pipe Using hand held, 1/16" wire flux core at 225 ipm, 24.5 volts with 100% CO2Thank YouJosephLast edited by Joseph~; 10-27-2013 at 07:51 PM.
Reply:As a hobbiest welder, I may not be fully qualified to answer you question, but...I would stay away from flux-cored when trying to build up filler. My experiance was tryin to stick weld a patch on a hydraulic cylinder. The flux kept intruding into the weldment.Once I swung over to solid wire MIG, I was able to lay down a good, pure metal bead. It's been leak free for 5 years now. Also, why are you 'stuck' with a bad fitup? Can anything be ground to get a better connection of your base pieces?Be wary of The Numbers: Figures don't lie,. but liars can figure.Welders:2008 Lincoln 140 GMAW&FCAW2012 HF 165 'toy' GTAW&SMAW1970's Cobbled together O/A
Reply:If you can fit your little finger in it, it's too big.As an aside, I would use a higher wire speed.
