On another site a guy bought a used Mig welder. He got a roll of 1/16” ER120S-1 wire with it. He did a search, and found out this wire is for welding T1 type steel. He wanted to know if he could use it to weld mild steel. I replied years ago I was on a job splicing I-beams, one of the other welders grabbed some 110-18 rod out of the wrong oven. The welding inspector rejected his splice, and made him cut the splice out and re do with 7018. For the life of me I can't remember the reasoning for this. I did a search for the reason not to use 110-18 on mild steel, but couldn't find any information on the subject. So, can any of the members here educate me?http://www.airgas.com/product/Weldin...l/p/ESA2112F28Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:High tensile strength goes along with higher hardness and lower ductility. Welding a mild steel member with a welding consumable with a lot higher tensile strength can affect how forces are transmitted and may lead to failure.Metallurgically it is not so much of a problem so depending on the application it could be used. Of course nothing is gained by using a higher strength consumable as the strength of the joint will be dictated by the mild steel HAZ and base metal.
