Hello Gents and Lady (as there's always at least one lady on a mostly male dominated board),I am a beginning welder. I have a new-to-me, used Miller s22 unit, running off of my XMT 304. Questions: 1. Getting this up and running, I'm not not sure the best way to connect the "welding cable" (Manual page 11, Figure 3.7) from the s22 to the XMT 304. Positive or negative terminal? How connect an eyelet to a lug? I'm sure there's a connector I can buy, just not sure which one I need. 2. What cables do I connect from the XMT 304 to the work piece? From the negative lug or the positive lug? When following my assumptions, I had no spark. Clearly I did not get it right. I have run stick and TIG from the 304, but the s22 adds a layer of complexity that I don't quite get. Thanks,Scott
Reply:Ok, I have cables for the front of the XMT with Dinse 50 connectors on them. Negative is all set - ground clamp is good to go. The issue that I have, or the desire really, is to use the nice, heavy 1/0 cable that came with the S22. It has lugs on both ends. One end is already attached to the s22 feeder drive stud. The other end clearly needs to (from your description above) connect to the Dinse connector on the front of the XMT. Is there a way to use the cable as is without cutting off the lug and putting on a dinse 50? I guess that is kinda a dumb question, because I'm going to have to buy some kind of dinse-to-lug converter anyway, so I might as well buy the Dinse and just make the cable easy to connect and disconnect rather than messing with a lug-to-dinse conversion. So, I think I answered that one myself. Re: the 14-pin cable. Interesting that it must be set to PANEL. I did assume it needed to be set to remote like my foot pedal. Note that it did feed wire when set to REMOTE. EDIT: Just reread your comment. I understand the Force (voltage) and arc spread knobs. Is the Arc knob increasing the amperage? Here's a photo (if I can upload one at this point with only 2 posts) for reference.Last edited by vae victus; 11-04-2013 at 09:31 PM.
Reply:The orange zone on the front panel turns the weld output on, White zone needs a remote trigger.Unless the welder sees a remote voltage/current control. the panel/remote switch does not work.
Reply:I have an S22 suitcase and my XMT has to be set to "Mig" not VS Feeder to work.  Just an observation based on your pic.  7A749 hooked me up with my 14 pin cable and set up for remote voltage for a very fair price While we're on the subject, what's the difference between the CC mode, TIG mode with the pedal pictured and the stick mode?Last edited by Drf255; 11-05-2013 at 05:21 AM.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:I believe the difference between tig and stick is the open circuit voltage. The machine will draw less amperage on tig than it will on stick at the same amp setting.Miller xmt304,  Miller S22 p12, Miier Maxstar SD, Miller 252 w 30A, Miller super32p12, Lincoln Ranger 9, Thermal Arc 181I with spoolgun, Hypertherm 10000 ,Smith torches. A quick look will confirm. Dinse has a round cylinder with a pressed in key like protrusion. Tweco ends have a split cylinder with a groove around it.No biggie. Post a pic & we will know for sure.
