I was "commissioned" last month by our eldest son and his wife to help with a Christmas gift for our youngest son (Brink M.E) and his wife for their new home. The gift was a pair of wall sconces based on an idea they saw using old wine bottles with their bottoms cut off (neat story there) and metal frames.  I forgot to take photos of the finished items where my son inset the frames into pieces of maple as backers and bolted them in place for final hanging.Well Judy liked them so much I surprised her with one of her own and I still have to make up its mate as she wants a pair and I only had time to knock one out. Then, during our last visit, we shared the idea with Judy's Uncle's wife and she showed us a bottle she saved because she liked the brand logo and she gave it us.  As she has been so gracious in often offering us a room when we make the trip to San Antonio I had to make one for her using the bottle she liked.  Hers was designed standing up which was described to me by my daughter-in-law when discussing those for Brink M.E. and his bride. All rings were turned on my Enco lathe and the finished were left natural for an "Industrial" look and sealed with clear coat. Thanks for looking.Last edited by duaneb55; 01-13-2014 at 11:32 AM.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Sweet, i like-it and the components are fun to empty first
Reply:Hey , that's a good idea. I'm surprised they turned out so well considering you had to drink two bottles of wine .   I think I would have been shltfaced.
Reply:Beautiful Duane, and nice touch with the raw finish. How did you cut the end of the bottles. I abandoned a side job very similar to yours, but the bottles were rectangular. I tried everything under the sun, but broke every bottle he had so I threw in the towel.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Reply:Great idea!I've done something very similar as a lamp for an eating table. Gave it to my mom this year for Christmas.Bare with me for the horrible photo. As the wiring was not easy to fit in an 1/2 inch pipe, I did it in my living room with the help of my girlfriend (small hands are handy sometimes). If you like I will make some more detailed photos.
Reply:Thanks guys but keep in mind I'm not that creative and didn't come up with the idea myself.  I will admit I did just go to the scrap "pile" to see what I had to work with and winged it from there but as for the original idea it was something our son and d-i-l saw and shared.I'll also point out I didn't take part in "preparing" the bottles for use as my wine drinking days ended in the mid '70s following putting down a whole bottle of Catawba Pink (I have NO idea where it came from) on top of a couple six-packs.  That's not the entire story and I just haven't been able to stomach wine since with that w/e being one of my less than proud of myself experiences. We ruined a couple bottles too attempting to cut them with a ceramic tile diamond hacksaw type blade and Dremel tool with cutoff wheel until I did the smart thing and Goggled the subject which yielded this:Absolutely incredible and happens just as seen in the video.  The thicker the bottle the more applications it takes but the ones for the first pair was score, dribble on boiled water, quench, more boiled water, bottom falls off in sink.  A quick dressing of the end with sandpaper or abrasive pad and done.  That easy. Here's my crude arrangement with a standard hand glass cutter to make it easy and assure scoring the bottles to the same length.  Just a piece of wood clamped in a vise, cutter positioned and held to board with Vise-Grips and angle stop clamped with same to board at the desired distance.  Make just one revolution to score and apply the water method.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:Apparently I was at my mother's house this morning so I could snap some photos of the lamp. I tried various different methods cutting the bottles but had no luck. I then cut them with a diamond wheel on a slab cutter. Worked out OK... Unfortunately I had some chatter. The frame is mig welded 1/2inch pipe. The caps are turned from st37 steel and press fitted. The cones for the cables are turned from the same material and tapped for a set screw to hold the cable up. I bend some c channel and welded it up to a box for the ceiling mount. Here are some pics.
Reply:Thanks for sharing. Also nice find on the bottle cutting video.  I'll have to file that away in the ol' noggin.  Just score once, gently heat with the boiling hot water, 'quench' with some cold tap water, repeat if needed.  Kewl.  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:Those are cool Duane. Are you gonna make a lamplighter (match holder) for easy lighting to go with them?
