Hi guys...first post here.I'm looking at a Lincoln AC/DC 225/125 (80's vintage) to replace my newer AC225.  The seller is asking $300 and includes a cart.  He is also willing to throw in an almost full 50lb box of Lincoln 1/8" 6013 rods if I pay full asking price.I could use the rods and at nearly 50lbs of them, this sounds like a good deal to me...assuming the 6013 rods are usable.  So my question becomes could these rods be effectively dried out in the oven (IF they don't weld well)?  Apparently some rods can be restored (dried out) and others can't?Figure I can just as easily pass on the rods and offer less than asking price too. What say you?
Reply:If an ad/dc lincoln 225 is what you are looking for, that is a pretty good price even without the rods.Hobart Beta-Mig 2511972 Miller AEAD-200LEMiller 250 TwinNorthern Ind. Hybrid 200Longevity Stick 140Longevity Migweld 200SThermal Arc Pak 3XR
Reply:Only rods with a fourth digit of 5, 6 or 8 are low hydrogen lime electrodes that need to be kept in an oven. As long as the flux isn't damaged and the rod isn't wet they will be fine to use. No rebake isrequired.
Reply:Curious what you need the DC for?
Reply:Personally I'm not a huge fan of 6013 in general. I see too many guys who bury slag when running them compared to say 7014. If you like them and can run them well, then they are of value to you. To me, I wouldn't add any value to the machine to get them.$300 isn't an unreasonable price for an AC/DC Lincoln like that. Around me they sell typically for between $250-350. I do often see the nicer Lincoln Idealarcs in AC/DC in the $300-400 price range semi regularly. A much nicer machine overall than the tapped smaller version by Lincoln. If you take a minute and add you location to your profile, we might be better able to give you an idea what things go for where you live. Location can drastically effect price and availability.Bosco Not all rods run on AC. Some hard facing rods, specialty rods and alum rods want DC only, as does good old 6010. Also many times rods simply run smoother and better in DC. 7018 for example can be sort of finicky on what Ac machines it will run on. On Dc they usually run no problem. I have the ability to run AC or DC on my Syncrowave, but I seldom if ever weld in Ac unless arc blow is a major issue. Most rod simply weld easier in DC..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:[QUOTE=AKweldshop;5406561]Who do you think you are to call out DSW???!!!DSW sounds like a great teacher and I apologize. And yes, I suck as a welder. Been doing it all my life and I still suck. Flunked a weld test long ago for undercutting. I suck. Can't tig weld at all. And am jealous of those guys who trained under DSW. I'm sorry. I'll try not to post anything ever again.

Reply:Yikes...I see a spirited discussion has sprouted!  So is the cup half empty or half full?  While I generally don't prefer it, it's obvious there are a few passionate about welding...an that's a good thing.  So the cup is half full :.)  I'm a member of several forums so am certainly not immune to "lively"discussion.  I appreciate each person's opinion and the wealth of experience here.Anyway, the only reason for wanting DC is from reading that's it's easier to spark and smoother arc (compared to AC).  I'm not brand new to welding but would still consider myself relatively green.  I've experienced frustration trying to learn on the AC 225 which I know is perfectly normal. However, I'm hoping a DC welder will ease that learning curve for the infrequent welding I do.
Reply:Recruit, hang in there and continue to ask questions of the group here.  There is a lot to learn from them.  The only bad question is one that isn't asked.

Reply:When my son was looking for an AC/DC stick welder we had our sights set on either a Miller Thunderbolt or a Lincoln tombstone unit.  We kept out eyes on Craigslist for a few weeks here in Austin TX and found none available.  Finally just took a Miller T-bolt in AC only because the price was good ($150 with all the leads cut off..... apparently that's the way schools are supposed to decommission them when they get new ones from Miller).  Those ac/dc machines aren't all that common around here... or maybe they get sucked up as soon as they hit the ads.Miller Syncrowave 350Millermatic 252/ 30A spoolgunMiller Bobcat 225g w/ 3545 spoolgunLincoln PowerArc4000Lincoln 175 Mig  Lincoln 135 Mig Everlast 250EX TigCentury ac/dc 230 amp stickVictor O/AHypertherm 1000 plasmaOriginally Posted by RecruitYikes...I see a spirited discussion has sprouted! Reply:I don't know if I would say it is easier to strike(spark)? Though it certainly does weld smoother (IMO). What it really seems to do is widen your range of rods that you may desire to use or need for a particular application. I use it quite a bit but weld AC quite often depending if its all that's available or application requires it. I agree $300 is reasonable.
Reply:I kind of figure, if the lincoln 225 is an adequate machine for the work you do, 6011 and 6013 are adequate rods for the work you do.Hobart Beta-Mig 2511972 Miller AEAD-200LEMiller 250 TwinNorthern Ind. Hybrid 200Longevity Stick 140Longevity Migweld 200SThermal Arc Pak 3XR
Reply:So.....that's why I asked why DC ......In my 20 years of heavy steady welding on an ac225 ....arc start was a problem...I solved that problem by using Hobart "easy arcs" 6011 1/8". They only come in 50lb boxes and have a white flux coating versus Lincolns grey. Problem gone!
Reply:Originally Posted by PipelinerIf he places a $50 value on the rods let him keep them and give him his $250 for the welder.  Otherwise it's not worth kicking the tires over $20. $300 isn't the deal of the century, but if it's not beat all to heck, you could use it for 10 years and still sell it for about that.
Reply:Offer $250, tell him to keep the 6013 and get some DC rods 6010 and 7018 run on reverse polarity.  The 6013 is a slutty_ rod, it uses AC and DC +/-.Bosco, lighten up man. DSW has helped me understand things about welding I would never have thought of and has been the first to mention things like: dont put your 6010 in the oven and some inverters dont run 6010 because the transistor power curves have a trade off to run TIG. I could go on about watching the puddle and all but that would take to long.BTW, I have some 6013 but dont care for it. Maybee the power curve on my inverter isnt designed for it Last edited by Insaneride; 02-10-2015 at 09:30 AM.

Reply:If you don't want the 6013 i'll take it! or.... i guess you could split it 50/50 with MN Dave and myself or 40/60... sorry Dave you get the 40 i am greedy for 6013 ha!
Reply:After finding about 7018 I try not to use 6013 at all... however, 7018 is more expensive and I just got a deal on 3 boxes of 5,5kgs of 4mm 6013. With a recommended amp range of 100-200amps... my 180 amps max inverter is going to get a workout, but I am eager to try them out! Even if it is only for practice, I think they are worth it. Arround here, just like in the UK, 7018 is not used that much.

Reply:Well the seller and I settled on $275.  Seems a fair price and includes a cart.  I don't pick it up until Monday.
Reply:I guess welder price is highly regional dependent.   I pickup a lincoln 225 AC only unit for $50 few months a go.  1976 vintage.
Reply:The DC unit will run more bucks.  A cart; a few more bucks.  Even so, $50 is a great deal for a AC unit assuming the leads are in decent shape.  You done good asm!

Reply:I paid 93.00 for a new Lincoln 225.I have an old 150 amp welder that cost 10 bucks.Still use it for most welding.
