i've been welding with 7018 3/32 rods on 1/8 steel  at 90 amps and sometimes 80 ampswith a good results no burn through at all i was wondering   what is the thickest steel ucan weld with 7018 3/32.
Reply:I wouldn't go over 1/4-inch thick, before switching to 1/8-inch rod. So now you're ready for pipe?Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Thick as you want. When welding larger joints 3/32" just doesn't put down enough weld to be productive(slow).Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG

Reply:7018, my favorite rod. I run my 3/32 at 80-100 depending on position and weld joint type. The material thickness is not a factor. For example, you just have to run additional passes if you want fillet welds larger than 1/4".ChrisAuction Addict
Reply:My magic number for 3/32 7018 is 86 for most pipe positions. Depends on the machine though.I've used 3/32 on xxl pipe just fine. Takes a crap load of passes though.
Reply:Isn't metal thickness a factor in getting good penetration?   If you were welding 1" or 2" thick steel, would 3/32" rod at 100 amps provide enough heat for good penetration?

Reply:That's the prob with some Testers, they make welders weld the way they do and not as a WPS or D1.1 allows. I never tell a welder what size rod to use. It's his test and as long as he is in the peramiters and doesn't violate essential virables GO FOR IT
Reply:Originally Posted by CEP. Who calls for a 1 7/8-inch fillet weld? Why not just round it off to 2-inches?
Reply:I only hire W.E's with welding backgrounds, they better be able to pass same test, your right tho
Reply:I worked in a RR car building facility, and the area I was assigned to, I used 1/4" 7018 all day long. I also welded the splice joints, uphill, with the same electrodes and the same amps as it was too far to the machine to change the heat and get different electrodes.
