Well its been a while since I stick welded and I have a splitting wedge to weld onto an I beam for a wood splitter project. The wedge is 1" thick A36 steel and I will be welding it to a 6" I beam. My question is what size rod and amperage should I use. I want to 3 pass weld each side. I have my old trusty Miller Dialarc 250 to weld with and I have plenty of scrap around to run a few practice beads to shake the rust off. LOL
Reply:How thick is the steel on the I beam?I would use 1/8" 7018 around 125-135 amps because that's what I have the most of. I wouldn't use any smaller than 1/8" but you could if you wanted to, just needs more passes to make a fillet weld the size you want. 5/32" would also be a good choice around 155-175 amps. Those are just examples of the amperage I would use with my machine, you need to find the best amperage for you.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:Where are you located? I have some McKay 5/16 7018. You can gave a few sticks. I'd bevel the end of the ibeam either way personally, but I'm not a pro.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:Mtch your fillet size to the thinnest material, which would be the I-Beam---------anything more is useless.6 Miller Big Blue 600 Air Paks2 Miller 400D6 Lincoln LN-25's4 Miller Xtreme 12VS2 Miller Dimension 812 4 Climax BW-3000Z bore welders Hypertherm 65 and 85Bug-O Track BugPair of Welpers

Reply:Depending how thick the beam is you may need some stiffeners to prevent the beam from tweaking.Miller xmt304, Miller S22 p12, Miier Maxstar SD, Miller 252 w 30A, Miller super32p12, Lincoln Ranger 9, Thermal Arc 181I with spoolgun, Hypertherm 10000 ,Smith torches. Esab 161lts miniarc.
Reply:Beveling the I beam is a good idea. Running multipass 7018 using 3/32 at 90amps or 1/8 at 125amps should do the trick.6"XX P5P8 6G |
