I was called out yesterday to look at a conveyor problem. They needed to remove a few links as they have reached the end of the slack adjustment. I was told the manual made it sound easy. Must have lost something in the translation from German to English.  We played around with the segment they removed trying to heat-n-beat, and built a quick press jig and tried pressing them out. No joy. Decided to drill them out. So back to the shop I went to build a drill guide and a long drill. I didn't take any pictures of the machine yesterday. I'll get some once setup. The drill is long now... it will be cut down onsite to around 24 inches and we'll attack from both sides. It will be started with a standard 12" drill.Started with a length of CR. Drilled and bored to accept a reduced shank drill. Next the bore was cross drilled with a small hole to allow the silver solder to flow through the entire bore. Silver soldered it and left it in vermiculite until it cooled nice and slow. Man silver prices are high.  Cleaned up the solder with the belt sander on the lathe. You can see the solder flowed and filled the vent hole.
Reply:Next I bored a 2" long bushing to serve as a drill guide. This was welded to the end of a length of angle. The angle will be tacking onto the conveyor hinge which is made from DOM tubing. This should put us dead down the center provide the segment is reasonably straight. Now that the easy part is done the real work begins.
Reply:Finished this job tonight. Glad to have this off my plate. The drill guide worked great but drilling 4' feet worth of 1/2" pins was not high on my list. As a backup plan I had made an adapter for the air hammer to drive some old hammer drills with the ends cut off. Hardest stuff I had handy. The drill guide worked fantastic for keeping the air hammer on the mark. Basically the first section went fast. Drilled into the end of each 6" section making a nice depression. Then heated the hinge section and worked it out with the air hammer. We had to do 7 sections. All but one went fairly easy. The last one had to be drilled three inches before the air hammer could get it to budge. The long drill worked great for cleaning up the bores. In all we removed two sections from the conveyor. If that didn't make sense... I have a few photos. Enjoy.

Reply:Used a come-along to suck the conveyor back together and pinned it temporarily. Drove the new pin into place with the air hammer. The anti-seize made it go very quickly. We would have pinned it last night but we weren't certain of the material the pin was made from. This morning the factory said they used hot rolled... so that's what we used. Buttoned the machine back up and it's back in business.

Reply:Very nice work forhire!!! What is that conveyor/machine for? Thinking, if I couldn't hammer out the pin, I would've thought the links were bent or misaligned, and never would've thought to drill them out. Nice job!"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:Defiantly filing the extended drill bit trick away in the grey matter. Great job. If you cant fix it with a hammer, it must be an electrical problem."Boy, everyone starts with a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before the bag of luck is empty."-Grandad circa 1990ish
