Hey guys - Yet another tread by me about used welders.... Thanks for your patients.   Anyway, where all do you guys find used welders at?  so far I've been looking on Craigslist mostly, a little on Ebay but shipping will eat up most of the discounts there.  Need to look into auctions but I haven't had time yet.  Anywhere else I'm missing?  Have thought about just looking up welding shops in my area and going around to each one asking if they've got any old used equipment sitting around that they want out of their shop.  Thanks,TylerMillermatic 135Syncrowave 250
Reply:They find you if you ask and search enough. Auction prices are often so close to "no tax-order from internet" prices that they aren't worth bothering with. The way to find deals is to have lots of spare time and do lots of searching. If it isn't a great deal, save yer money for a new machine since you are already doing that. I'd buy the Hobart you want (check internet prices) and wait to get the spoolgun, which would give you a welder in-hand with which to make a few bucks to buy more toys.

Reply:I was in the same position last summer, wanted to get a welder for home use but didn't want to spend big bucks on new equipment.  I watched my local Craig's List like a hawk and almost got a couple of good deals (though both times I was too late so maybe I wasn't watching as closely as I thought) then I started worrying about buying a worn-out machine someone had over-worked (since I was looking at 120V models from Lincoln, Miller and Hobart I was worried about that).  Long story made short I ended-up buying a brand-new Hobart Handler 140 from Amazon for about the same as what some of the sellers on Craigs were asking for comparable used Lincoln equipment.  The other advantage is that I know the machine hasn't been misused which may or may not be a concern for you depending on your level of experience (I'm a beginner at best so I wasn't sure I'd be able to tell if a used machine had problems or not).  So far I've had good luck with my unit, the initial investment was a bit more than I wanted to spend but so far I think it's been worth it, at least for me.Good luck!--KevinHobart Handler 140Lousy chop sawBig fire extinguisher"If I could keep my workbench from catching on fire I'd be un-stoppable!"
Reply:Well I've got about enough money to pull the trigger on that Hobart.  I've just been keeping my eye out on CL mostly and seeing some Synco 180's for just a hair more than the $900 northern tool price for a hobart 210 with a spool gun (around $1200 for a 180sd setup).  Since it's for home I'm not really constrained to MIG to get jobs done as fast as possible, it's more for tinkering with and welding stuff on my/my dads boats (hence the spool gun or TIG) and making stuff for my truck/tractor.  Plus if I get a big 'ol TIG welder my buddies wont be trying to come use it because it takes too long and is too difficult.  Plus once they shock themselves they'll probably give up.   Might try to buy a little 110v mig for tacking stuff up/welding out in the yard but them old hobart 135's are a dime a dozen on CL these days.  Sounds like CL is probably the way to go, aside from asking around.  Might go do some of that, or have my buddy who's a mobile welder ask around a little since he's no stranger to most of the shops around.Millermatic 135Syncrowave 250
Reply:You could also check with your LWS. Some welding stores take trade-ins when they sell new equipment. Sometimes they end up with demo models for sale at a reduced price as well. They may also know of customers that are thinking of selling their equipment. Not that I would recommend trying this, but, one of my coworkers was went to an auction at a local U store it type place. He bid 1 dollar on an 8X10 unit full of crap. Most of the stuff went straight to GoodWill but, in the back he found a Lincoln 110 volt mig welder, brand new in an unopened box..Will
Reply:I posted exactly what I wanted in the wanted section of craigslist.  I received several replys.  Many were for what I wanted, many were for what I didn't want.  I then reposted a more specific post on craigslist and within a week was able to buy the welder I wanted with all the accessories I wanted at the price I wanted.  I guess craigslist works better if you live in a descently populated area, I live in Las Vegas.Good luck.*************************************Mike AccardiHenderson, [email protected] 250XLincoln Weldpack HDMiller Syncrowave 180 SD*************************************

Reply:I know this is a little late, but anybody searching for used equipment, don't discount the rental companies.    Especially for commercial grade equipment, they can offer pretty good deals, don't be put off by the listed price on the websites, if you have cash, and want to buy, they will negotiate.    Just a few years ago, I bought a couple low hours 500 amp engine drives, for a price they both paid for themselves in six months.     Check out Redi-arc, and RSC rentals in particular.   I also was able to get a complete maintenance history on both machines.    I bought from RSC, out of the bay area, ex-refinery rentals, they not only gave me a great price, even delivered the first one to the job-site for me, second one to my yard.
Reply:Hm, I dunno about rental yards.  Seems like you could get some pretty abused equipment.  I know when I was looking for tractors I looked at a few that used to be rentals and they were pretty much destroyed, especially in comparison to the craigslist home owner tractors.  It's worth a shot though.Millermatic 135Syncrowave 250
Reply:Craigs worked for me. Found a Miller 250X listed on craigs but was actually at a pawn shop. $500 later, I rolled it into my truck, and flew outta there. Then I found a Spoolmatic 30A on eBay, with a buy it now for $400. I jumped on that. Turns out the thing had never even been hooked up to a machine. It was all dusty from sitting.......somewhere. Cleaned it up, unwrapped the spool of wire, and threaded it, and went to town. Guess it made up for the fact that I paid full retail for my little Miller SD180..Chainz
Reply:Sweet - well I have been watching CL like a hawk.  missed a couple good deals but there will be more.  I'll be a little more excited about dropping $1000 on a welder once I sell my bike and or car.  Just got too much money tied up in other toys that I never use.    definitely wont pass up a screaming deal if I find one though.  thanks for all your input, guys.  Millermatic 135Syncrowave 250
Reply:Don't ignore the swap and sell on here and the miller board.  I bought a virtually brand new TA-185 for about 400 bucks off of new.  The guy had just barely used it before getting a deal on the TA-300 AC/DC.  When I got it, it showed about 1/2 hour on the meter, and everything was packed as it was from the factory.Who is John Galt?
Reply:None of my machines were technically "new", except for my little Victor torch kit.  The 135 was from Fleebay, it is a reconditioned demo model but carries a 3 year warranty, the Econotig was garage kept in great condition and never stick welded with, (At least not until I got it, but it works great, I just got done stick-welding with it tonight!) but it was advertised here, the 250 I got from Craigs', it was left to rot in the rain, but I use mig a lot and just don't care because I can fix it, and the 304 was a rental from Rediarc. It was a Fleebay special which was tested & reconditioned before selling. Attached ImagesCity of L.A.
